acro flatworms
hey guys,
just have some questions about these buggers... I have a cali tort, a loripes and a ora green birdsnest that are all showing signs of stn... I am wondering how fast these things work on a particular coral and whether or not all sps are affected.
I have taken both the loripes out and the birdsnest and have turkey basted the heck out of them to get something to fall off. Nothing. I am wondering how fast these corals will be affected if the flatworms are definately on them.
I've been keeping sps for a long time now, and I've checked all the usual suspects. My alk is 9 dkh, ph is 8.2, and calcium is 450. Magnesium is about 1150, a little low, but i've never had a problem with it.
I've treated for red bugs within the past week and no signs of change. This isn't color fading, it's tissue receeding.
I've looked locally for levasimole (sp?), and i'll have to order it if i need it.

have you tried going to a place that sells farm stuff and asking for pig dewormer? That is how I got my lavimasole.

Have any close up pictures of the corals? Especially the area where the tissue loss is taking place?

yeah, went to the feed store today, and they didn't have it. they would have to order it. we don't have fleet farms down here. i'll try a different place tommorow.
I don't have any pictures of the infected areas. All I can tell you is that they look exactly like the pics I've seen on RC about AEFW, but I have yet to find an actual flatworm.

When you say they look the same, you mean the general death progression or visable sacks of eggs?

If possible to remove the infested coral, take it out and let it sit for a few minutes to partially dry off. The coral tissue will turn a uniform flat color while any flatworms will maintain a slick slime like appearance under bright lights. If you've got them and they're established, as it sounds they are, you're in for an annoying battle.

I'll take one of the corals out again tonight to see if I notice any slime discoloration..... But, to be honest, I looked real hard last night and didn't find anything. I know what to look for, but don't see it. No eggs or anything.
The way the tissue is dying is why I think I have them. The green birdsnest and the tort are on the underside, and the loripes is on both sides. I yanked a tricolor about a week ago, because I suspected these buggers, but didn't find anything on it. It was so bad I had to leave it out of the tank there wasn't much to save.
I hope to get this cleared up soon. It comes at a really bad time. If I still have them in a month or so, I may be forced to kill some sps, so I won't transfer the things.

You have almost 0% chance of seeing the actual flatworm inside the tank, you can possibly see eggs sometimes but they can be pretty sneaky about where they lay them as well. I actually had some laying eggs on the underside of the coral through a small gap where the coral had encrusted onto the rock.

Yes, I've been taking them out of the tank to check them over. I have checked all of them at least 3 (some even closer to 6) times now and haven't found a flatworm or eggs. I've checked the whole thing, they aren't that large of pieces.
Also, people don't seem to use levamasole around here, the dewormer everyone carrys is something else, so I will have to order some online if I can find a place.
Does anyone know how fast these guys work? Some corals have shown symptoms for about 3-4 weeks now, I just didn't diagnose it until recently. I'm not even positive it's them, since I can't find them.

Also, could someone please snap a picture of what you get at Fleet Farm for Levamisole? I need to order some online and would like to get a similar product so I can follow the guidelines some of you posted about in an earlier thread...
