Well after about a month with only freshwater fish to look at I have decided that I need a little reef for next to my computer.

Haven't decided if I am going to get a canopy for it or get a pendant to hang over it. I am leaning towards the pendant for heat reasons. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I would like to keep sps and a few zoas in this tank. I am thinking I just want to focus on 3-4 really nice sps and only a few really nice zoanthid colonies for around the bottom. I don't realy have any experience with MH, I would like to have something that I can keep some SPS (without them just turning brown) but not melt my zoanthids...

I am also not going to drill this tank or have a sump. Have decided to get either a aquaC remora with the pre-skimmer box (hopefully that will get rid of the surface scum) or a CPR bakpak skimmer. If anyone has any used ones they are looking to part with or any suggestions that would be great.

Anyway, if anyone has any used hang on skimmers I would love to hear from you, otherwise I plan on ordering the lights and a skimmer if need be on Monday...

corallife sells a 175 watt pendant available in a 20 k. It screws into the ceiling and you can raise it up and down with a mechanism that is built in. Nice light for the desktop reef. Good luck!

If you decide on a canopy or want to hang something that would hide a Ghetto set up, I have a 150 MH ballast and set up with a 6500k bulb used the equivalent of one week. You may want a new reflector, but I'd let the whole works go for $75. Think I paid about $60 for the bulb and it's still got virtually it's whole life left.

Mike - is it a electronic ballast?

Casey - I think your right about the pendant.. I think at the angle it would blind me...

Clownnut - from everything I have read about those over on nano-reef.com they seem like they would be ok if you wanted to put a couple fish in there and call it a day. But to make them reef ready takes a whole lot of modifying... The overflow doesn't actually skim off the surface without modding, the lighting is only 48 watts and there really isn't an easy way to put on a skimmer without cutting up the lid... Plus I have read lots and lots and lots of stories about them cracking due to too thin of glass only 12 gallon ones not the 24)

I would look for a 70w de MH pendant, and build a three sided fake canopy so that all of the light is directed into the tank. Or maybe look into T5s. Also do you plan to keep any fish in this tank?

thought about 70 watt de, but they seem to be real expensive. even more then a 250 watt de setup... Any suggestions where to look....

As far as fish I was going to keep it real light.... Probably just 1 yellow tang, 1 hippo tang, 2 mandirins and a golden moray eel to start out with, and then after it cycles for 3 days add the other half of the fish.....

(but for real, probably just a pair of clowns)

I am also going to do the cutting board bare bottom thing too. Should be cheap since its' such a small footprint... I could probably get a cutting board at walmart bigger and cut it down to fit.

I think Dirk might have 70w pendants.

IMO I wouldn't add any fish, if you are going to add fish, I would only add one.

Do you think electronic ballasts would interfere with your computer?

I am not doing a sump on this tank I know that there will be some cooling issues, but I have been hanging out on nano-reef.com since before I have been here. I know that it can be done, with the right setup. I have seen 250 - 400 watt pendants over 10 and 20 gallon tanks with no sumps that have some pretty sweet sps growin in them. Also as I mentioned, this tank is only going to have 3-4 sps and a few zoanthid colonies, I don't think the 48 watts would cut it for me. Plus by the time you modify the nano cube and but all the stuff to do that it costs way more $ and it's really only about 8 gallons of display area.

What's the reasoning on this? Bio load, or because they won't have room to swim?

I would think a magnetic one would.. but the ballasts will be electronic and mounted remotely about 10 feet away so they aren't under my desk over hear heating up my feet.
