As with just about any heater brand really "Luck" is the key word.

I personally have never had any problems with the Won non-digital ones providing using on an additional temp. controller.

finnex makes a titanium heating tube with no controller. you can get them from premium aquatics.

I like the idea of using one with a built in controller and a second controller on top of it. Redundancy is golden.

100% agree. Just make sure the second controller is not the Won Brothers digital, I have heard too many horror stories.

i am a big redundancy guy BUT...
i have found that my tank is much more stable (temperature-wise) since changing to a ranco single stage controller and finnex titanium heating element (without thermostat).

i think the idea of placing the temp sensor in the same housing as the heating element is just asking for trouble. it would be like placing your home's thermostat in the furnace.

anyways-cwr-the finnex heating elements (without controllers) were available at sf at one time-i know cuz i got mine there.
