why not to pay $5.99 for a snail

This crab came in a shipment of scarlet reef crabs I got a while back. The crab is getting huge!!!

Anyway I purchased three huge mexican turbos and over night the red crab found a new home. $5.99 gone, the crab is a hard worker so I guess $5.99 a month isn't a bad salary to have to pay.

I forgot to mention, I know it's not a scarlett crab, not sure what it is, but if he keeps growing his days are numbered

I have a hermit in my tank that is huge also.
It is unusual because it is black and orange.

The one key I've found to keeping hermits and snails together, is you have to have loose shells for the hermits to move into as they grow.

I've seen some of my hermits sporting new shells, other than the ones I put in.
I think hermits are opportunistic and prey on weak or dead snails, which is good because they clean the dead carcus from the tank.
I personally have never seen a hermit kill a snail, I've seen them crawl on them but not kill them and I spend hours staring into my tank.

JMHO

Cheers
Mike

Ya know as many of these guys as I realistically need for my 180, I have been looking for a cheap sourcefor turbos. Has anyone ordered from keys critters before? Looking at their website they have some real attractive prices and I have been considering ordering form them, or even getting a group order up. Sorry to edit, but 100 turbo astrea snails for $36 or .36 a snail....

looks like he may be a Dardanus Hermit. Yes they get really big. I had one in a shell that was larger than my fist in a fish only for a few years. However they will occasionally eat bubble algea if you have any.

They will kill for new shells....throw as many shells in there as possible to avoid it and they will also kill if the food supply is too low. Also sounds like you have a halloween hermit.

A couple of my hermits have now killed 3 turbos for their shells. There were other shells in there for them, but I guess they liked the snail shells better, lol. Onehermit also killed another for it's shell. These guys just don't care, lol. But the chances of them killing a snail are reduced if there are plenty of empty shells for them to choose from that are bigger than their current shell.

This hermit is fearless. I'll pick it up and he stays out of his shell, he'll retract back a bit but pop right back out while in my hand. I kind of like him.

Thumbs up

Daytona
Try West Coast Tropical Marine. I placed a large invert order with them. I didn't have a single DOA and no die off after acclimating. Their communication was a bit lacking, but they have good prices and quality livestock.

Cheers
