Water Storage

I'm in the process of setting up a new RODI unit in the basement for my two tanks and was looking at the 25 gallon rubermaid containers at home depot for like $5. Has anyone ever used this type of container for water storage.

You know the ones. You can buy them anywhere and come in a variety of colors and sizes. I have looked at actual water containers online and most of them run in the $100 range.

Any comments appretiated.

Doug

I use one...I drilled it and siliconed a jaco 1/4" bulkhead fitting in it and I am using it to gravity feed my sump with a Kent Float valve. I have been using it for about 3 years...works like a charm. Mine is blue so light won't penetrate and cause algae....hard to beat!

We use the 35 gallon Brute trash can from Home Depot. It has nice thick walls so it won't deform when full.

I own several of the 45 gal Rubbermaid Gray Brute trash cans with the wheel dollies under them to service several tanks. I have used the lighter duty ones, they work well so long as they don't need to moved much.

Unhappy

This is my experience with the dark green 25 gallon plastic garbage containers on wheels from Home Depot. I had filled it about 3/4 full. It was in the room next to the kitchen. The door was closed. My daughter has a screen saver that has a sound on it like a crash of waves or thunder. Heard a noise. Thought that was it. Then water started pouring out from under the door. The container had fallen over all by itself. The window was open and there must have been just the mere zephyr of a breeze that blew it over.

yes, those are entirely too flimsy, they will collapse under the weight of the water inside the container. The brute cans are sold as separate can and dolly arrangements, intended to hold water and food grade at that. The dolly screws onto the bottom of the brute can as a threaded platform.

Worth every penny, I have been using mine for about 6 or 7 years without mishap.

I have heard issues where heaters can sometimes melt the plastic. Seems like the temp would have to be extremely high for that to happen. I was just wondering if anyone here has experienced this before or if its not really a big deal. Thanks.
