Walt Smith Fiji Gold

Ok I have been using it twice aweek fro 2 weeks now. I like it. I think?

I just checked my Ph this morning. It was 8.0 or below! Depending on the light I was in. Anyone else notice a dramatic reduction in their Ph?

I buffered it up today with Kent. So I will check it later.

Need to know.. what else could cause the loss of Ph. Mine has never been below 8.2 EVER.

Todd

Did you see my thread a week ago, todd? I had a HUGE pH swing the first time I used it, and the pH has been a bit lower ever since. After the second dose, I didn't notice any shifts. I haven't been able to determine whether this is from the Fiji Gold, my pH probe needing recalibration, or something else.

Nothing in the tank has noticibly suffered from the swing in pH, however.

Or maybe that's why many of my sps are whiting out? But I'm pretty sure it's from adding a new batch of carbon and regenerating my purigen in the same day...

Everything in my tank is fine as well. Nothing different other than Ph below 8.

I buffer the topoff water, and once every week or two I mix up kalk instead of buffering (though I haven't for a few weeks)

Todd, you should be able to find it on my recent threads here--but it probably won't do you any good since I don't think anyone responded...

I have never had to buffer before. I also tested my Ca today. It was 350. So this stuff in my opinion is doing absolutely nothing but lowering my Ph.

I think I am bagging the stuff.

I am using it in both of my big tanks -- I have just looked at the corals, not the pH values, and I appear to continue to get good extension on all the polyps.

Snake oil? In this hobby? Surely you jest....

Actually, given its make-up, I can't see it being anything harmful, but could be potentially valuable. So far I am very pleased.

Steve

I've been adding it for the past 2 weeks and have noticed many of the same things. I initailly discountinued my Kalkwasser dosing (based on the discussion I had with Walt Smith regarding the product) but I restarted it after the second dose of Figi Gold didn't bring my calcium and PH levels up to where they'd been. I've continued using it though, because like Steve, I'm thinking that based on what it's made of, the potential outweighs the risk of using it and the corals certainly seem to respond in a positive way. I've tried to find additional information about it but haven't had any luck. Anybody found any other comments regarding it use?

There is a link on Reef Central, but no one is responding either.

I am going to use it up just so I watch the fish get pissed off when their world goes grey.

I used it once last week and turned the tank (32gallons=1 tablespoon of gold)super cloudy for literally 6 hours or so, of course super cloudly in the beginning where you could see anything to semi-cloudy at the end of the 6 hours. I have since put in a frogspawn and some star polyps. Do you guys think this cloudyness will hurt the soft corals?

It won't harm them.
