UV Sterellizer?

Hi All,
I have a question about UV sterelizers. Are they useful? I read somewhere that they were good against algae growth or sickness outbreak. What are your opinions about that?
I would like to buy one but I am not sure if it will be useful.

I have one and find that it helps to run it when I see "the red slime" creeping up. If I think about it, I will turn it on when i scrape algae off the glass. If I did not own one, I dont think I would buy one unless it was a used one at a good price.

I use them on my saltwater resevoir that i make new saltwater in since i let it sit in there for a week before doing water changes. They work but not very efficiently, not near as effective as ozone.

I have had success in using one to treat marine ich in a reef tank. It was impossible to catch the diseased fish and I have not liked using chemical treatments with all of my inverts.
