Transporting corals

Dumb question, but what is the best way to transport corals, soft SPS or other. I have never purchased a coral and I am not sure how they are transported...or if they will experience die off from being exposed to air..

I will warn you not to do what I did once. bought a mushrock at CB and didnt pay attention to the bag when I got into my jeep. Laid the bag down and drove home. the mistake was the the rock was upside down in the bag rubbing the floor board for the ride home. to say the least the rock and shrooms did not look as good as thay had in the display tank t the store. the shrooms were scuffed up.

Man, I used to have a jeep. I really miss that thing! Talk about a fun vehicle-except at the gas station. Cha-ching!

i use tupperware (wont puncture and leak like a baggie) inside of cooler bags that are room temp. dont put the cooler in the 200 degree trunk and then store corals in it on the way home.

When you transport over a long period of time (long distance or many stops) or even a short time in the summer or winter, I use a little igloo cooler to transport. That way when the bags leak (it's not really a question of if, it is WHEN ) the water is contained and they keep their temp stable a lot longer.

I've seen stony corals shipped with a couple of small Styrofoam blocks rubber banded to the base so that they float without touching the bag. You want to avoid touching the corals to the inside of the bag because it irritates them and they make more mucus. Too much mucus and the coral can suffocate! I don’t think it hurts them much to be splashed and exposed to air but a lot of handling and banging around is not good.
