Too much noise
I need to quiet the overflow on my tank. It is a 1.5" bulkhead, I have a PVC right angle in it facing up, and it makes a lot of noise. On the other side of the bulkhead is a T with a cap on one side with a hole and a piece of airline tubing, and on the other side is a 1.5" flex PVC down to my sump.
Will increasing flow head? Right now there is about 600 GPH going up through a Squid.
I can't take it, in fact I spend most of the time right now with the pump off.
HELP!!!
David

Are we talking "slurping" noise or just water running noise?
I found inserting a piece of air tubing so that it snakes from the overflow down about 10" or so into the overflow tubing allowed air to flow in there that eliminated the slurping noise in my pvc-pipe overflow.
Another thing to try is to find some sort of screening to insert in there. Large hole stuff like 1/4" or so. My overflow is 1" so I just used some of that stuff that comes with the Megaflow overflow kits.

Water running. It is driving me insane. I have the airline tubing, and I don't get a slurping.

David,
once the water passes through the teeth of the overflow, how far is it "falling" inside? Is there a few inches difference between the water level inside the overflow and the water level of the display area?

See above, not a traditional overflow, it is a PVC pipe as an intake down to a sump, meeting a T on the otherside of a bulkhead, with flex PVC down to the sump.

Maybe if you cut a teeth-like arrangement in a piece of PVC pipe and insert it into the elbow you might get the effect you're after.

I will try that. This isnt just slight noise, this is drive you crazy type of noise. One of the reasons I am considering a 58, with the overflow kit from Oceanic.

take some gutter guard from local hardware store (the plastic screen mesh) and cut it lengthwise si its about 6" x 2" or so roll it up so it 2" tall and stick it in there. My noisy PVC it now very quiet, I also rolled one up and zip tyed around the outside as a debris screen. Clean by weekly or so just to be safe. If you need pics ask, I can take a pic.

I think a picture would help here.
Is this not an overflow at all? As in there is no box surrounding the bulkhead and drain for the display water to over flow into?
The elbow is facing up toward the water's surface?

Try what I posted.... if its clear. I was pushing 1000 gpm through 2 1" pvc they started to gurgle so I threw that in it stops the water from swirling.

I don't know that you can cure it of sound, but perhaps reversing the elbow so that it faces down (as it would in a durso style overflow) and covering the inlet with some type of screen to keep critters from getting sucked into it could help.
