I think I did the same thing the last time I used my meter; it's good to know that I'm the only one that's done it

In Cherokee County, the county water supply is drawn from the Etowah River (above Canton) and my tap water was 420 back during the early Spring. That's when all of the farmers fertilize their fields!
I have noticed that it gets lower after springtime. I'll have to recheck it.
Last week my TDS after RO/DI were 0.

Whoa!
Have you taken a look at your water quality report? During the times when the TDS shoots that high, call your city/county water department and ask them if they are aware of it, and ask about nitrates and phosphates in the water as well.
HTH,
Michael

When my wife was the County Commision Chairman [~ to Wayne Hill of Gwinett or Mike Ken of Fulton Co] for Cherokee County (1998-2002), we took several water plant tours. I've discussed this with the mgr of public relations as well as the plant superintendent. That's why I said it's from the fertilizer runoff from the farms in rural Cherokee and Forsyth.
I had terrible hair algae even though I was using a "Tap Water Purfier". I tested the phosphates in my tank and they were very high. That's when I contacted the dept of water works and got the above explanation.
I now use a R/O DI system and my TDSs are zip!

It'd be interesting to see the results from everybody in the spring to see if the fertilizer issue affects us here in the city...

Those are all VERY low numbers - your membranes and resin ought to last forever!

Mine is 55ppm in Dekalb Co. I'm close enough to the water treatment plant that you can sometimes get a good wiff of it. Nothing like that fresh fall air...

Hopefully your potable water comes from one water treatment (supply) plant, and what you're smelling is from another (waste treatment plant)!
