Stupid Fish

Does anyone else have stupid fish like I do?......

So there I was, sitting on the couch last evening watching TV, I hear a big splash and immediately look over at the tank(220 gal in my living room). I see nothing unusual, fish swimming around looking normal, but I didn't see one of my big blue tangs. I figured he was in his little hiding spot in the rocks. Didn't think anything more about it. I sat there for about a minute and thought I’d just make sure everyone was accounted for. The cat and I headed over at about the same time. I went to the front of the tank, she went to the back. Then I heard it....a fish flopping around behind the tank.....Stupid Fish....I guess he didn't want back in the tank because he fought me each time I would pick him up. Finally got him back in there and checked him out. he seemed fine....except he was covered in cat hair from behind the tank.....Stupid Fish.....

my wife and i were walking by the tank when we noticed a pair of eyes looking up at us. the lawnmower man had been perched on the rail of my tank for an unknown amount of time... he was a little dried up but when i tossed him into the tank he revived...he's 5 years old next month.

I've been thinking about putting egg crate across the back of the hood to prevent my fish from going on impromptu vacation from the tank. I've got egg crate covering the tank, but there are so many stories of fish getting out the spaces cut to accommodate powerheads and things.

Anybody tried this?

Glad you all got your fish back in before it was too late! One of my bar gobies wasn't so lucky.

We had a jawfish that jumped through the holes in the eggcrate. He did it just right and that was all it took for him. I guess there isn't a lot to use that won't take away from the light.

Yeah i had a tiger goby jump out and dry up, and my old female clown of 4 years decided to jump onto the rim of the tank a few months back for no apperent reason as well

FYI you can revive fish after a pretty long time on the floor by holding them and moving them back and forth through the water to get water over the gills. while back when working at under the wave I founc a fish while sweeping up totally covered in crap and almost dry. ploped it back in the tank , moved it around a bit and next day it was fine.

I am fighting my bicolor blenny from jumping into the prefilter section of my nano12dx. 3 times now I have come home to find him lying on the sponge. He has survived each time so far... I pick him up and put him back into the tank and he looks pretty pissed for a day or 2. You know how they look... Eyeballs rolling all over! lol
I used to have a jawfish in there but he jumped in the same compartment and didn't survive!

I'm checking on getting some glass cut to fit inside the canopy to keep the fish from splashing the halides.....I hope to size it right so it will be a barrier to fish base jumping.....Stupid Fish.....

I like my open top, but I've had my fair share of jumpers. Sort of limits what I can put in there. I might experiment with a small barrier that just extends around the lip of the tank a bit to act as a barrier. That way I still have the open top.

My tiger sleeper goby jumped right through eggrate that was covering my quarantine tank. Fortunately, he jumped in response to me coming into the room, so I was right there when it happened. I have eggrate over the open back of my canopy and since it is vertical, it should be tougher for a fish to hit it at just the right angle to go through. I have my overflows covered, but I do worry about a fish jumping on top and not being able to flop back into the tank.

a simple, inexpensive fix:

I have taken plastic screening, the replacement stuff for window and door screens (obviously, don't buy the metal) and wrapped the eggcrate. It makes a nice cover if the lights aren't too close to melt the screen. I use very small plastic wire ties to attach the screen.

I also have used this to make barriers in the sumps, even though it may need some cleaning, it also makes an excellent breeding ground for those little shrimp creatures.

Speaking of jumping fish:

My 6" hippo is frequently splashing water over the sides of the tank. Last weekend, when I was feeding the tank, I guess he got excited & jumped into the overflow. I was amazed at how heavy that fish was.

Here is a good one....
About a week ago a volitan lion was spooked or flipped out or something...anyways he jumped clear out of the aquarium and nailed me then hit the floor. That was the first and last flying lion fish that I would ever want to encounter. Or maybe he was pissed about me feeding the fish beside him and not giving him any.
