SaltwaterU2
Do you want to be involved in the planning of SWU2? If so - let me know your strengths - how you would like to participate and any ideas you have! We are going to plan an even bigger and better Saltwater U for 2006 - it is going to be fun - but also a lot of work!
Thanks,
Margi

Great! We also had about 25 people sign up for the committee at last night's meeting...
If you want to join the planning committee - please send me your name; address; phone number; e-mail address and AIM name (if you have one) to Shindell@bellsouth.net
Thank you again!

Let's get going!
Outstanding meeting! Thank you to all that attended!
NOW - we need to get going -
As I see it - these are the committee as of now - please let me know which ones you are interested in participating in during the coming year...
1) Agenda - in charge of working out who is doing what where and when - this group needs to work closely with the Venue and Speaker committees. Additionally they need to coordinate with the raffle; teen and kid's committees.
2) Audio Visual - make sure we have footage and pictures of everything - and make available for sale in a marketable packages (including pre-sales).
3) Book Store - more than just books - t-shirts; mugs; pencils - plus book signing coordination. OH - and making sure we have a way to take credit cards - and working out that little thing called "Sales Tax"...
4) Catering - good food and lots of it - for a price we can afford!
5) Educators Programs - designing a program so our teachers can receive continuing education.
6) Exhibitors - This committee is in charge of ALL THINGS regarding Exhibitors
7) Field Trips - needs to work with the Spouses committee, the teen committee and the Scuba Committee
8) Grant Writing - We need to starting writing grants NOW - and continue through the fall and winter.
9) Kid's Program - this is the overall committee over the Kids' Camp; Teen program and the "babysitting". The babysitting is just that - pre-arranged babysitting for children outside the timeframe of the kid's camp or too young.
10) Kid's Camp - not just a "day care" but a meaningful program for our kids (ages 4 (potty trained) to 12) - need to work with the Georgia Aquarium for ideas and locations.
11) Legal - We need to incorporate; we need to make sure we have liability insurance; we need to make sure we have contracts.....
12) Marketing & Advertising - HUGE and very important committee
13) Money - Budget; spending; allocations; premissions; record keeping; reporting...
14) Parties - well we are volunteers; we need to have FUN~
15) Program Book - this is going to work closely with the Marketing, Advertising and Sponsor committees.
16) Raffle - HUGE (thank you Chris) - needs to be organized down to the minute well before the conference.
17) Registration - This has some pre-conference work - but a lot of the work is actually DURING THE CONFERENCE...
18) Preservation/ Conservation Issues - this is our motto "Preservation through Education" we need to keep this in our program.
19) Scientific Papers - getting the scientific community involved!
20) SCUBA - a BIG part of SWU2
21) Speakers - Of course - what would be be without the speakers - this committee is in charge of getting the quality and quantity of speakers; plus taking care of thier every need (we want happy speakers!)
22) Special Events - let's try to arrange some extras - who knows what might be available - maybe behind the scene tours?
23) Sponsors - of course - we need our sponsors... Very important committee
24) Spouses Program - let's keep our non-reefkeeping spouses happy - side trips; (Stone Mountain, Phipps Plaza, Aquarium Tour, what else?)
25) Teen Program - VERY BIG...
26) Transportation - getting from here to there...
27) Venues - contacting; coordinating; day of conference...
28) Website - We need SEVERAL webmasters to keep the website up and interesting.
29) Workshops - organize; plan and schedule meaningful workshops.
Okay - that is a lot - but we can do it! Let me know where you want to help!

Id be interested in any of those-
I do have a few ideas...
I do know that the Ga Aquarium has a large ball-room. What about using that space for SWU2? Im sure that someone has thought of the idea, but it does seem like it would be a good place to have it. Maybe there could be a package deal for some ickets to the aquarium and SWU2 all together?
In relation to the SCUBA and raffle committees - what if we can raffle off a few dives in the aquarium? Im sure there are some legality issues and it would be likely that the aquarium would say no - but it was be an amazing experience.

Margi,
I've been told that I have to help with education and that there's no way I'm getting out of it Sorry, I didn't make it to the meeting.

Brian -
SWU2 is at the Georgia Aquarium (although the pricing is still being negotiated, and we still might use Zoo Atlanta for some events), and the Georgia Aquarium will probably be our perminent venue.
There is NO WAY we can raffle off dives in the Aquarium. There is extensive training for staff and volunteers, and at the moment, there are 1000 people signed up for volunteers (about 400 trained).
We did raffle off behind the scenes tours at the Georgia Aquarium for SWU1, and we will probably do something along the same lines. Bruce Carleson did say that he would go diving with the people at Gray's Reef.

Alicia - I have you on the list (don't worry - it will be FUN!).
Brian - Could you please sent me a PM with your full name; e-mail address and phone number - also if you have an AIM name that will be useful for in the future.
Anyone else that wants to jump on board our growing team - just let me know! All smiling faces are welcome.

I'd love to see a workshop on DIY projects or something of that nature. Or could someone at least publish a "Complete Idiot's Guide to Wiring lighting kits so that you don't electrocute yourself or burn down your house" and the companion "Plumbing handbook for girls who don't know anything about plumbing except that PVC is a little plastic pipe".
