Question about fish stores and DSB

As I was perusing the goods at Marine Fish tonight I thought of something profound. Why is it that deep sand beds are recommended so much, yet the fish stores rarely have them in their reef tanks? Both of the show reef tanks at Marine Fish had no substrate, or maybe just a little crushed coral.

Also, perhaps this should be a separate thread, but does anyone have any ideas for sand beds on the cheap? I understand we can't get Southdown sand (aragonite based) in Atlanta. So is our only option to get the Carib-Sea type stuff? Basically I was looking at using about half Carib-Sea and half basic aragonite sand for my next tank.

Depends on the store's philosophy. Differs, look at TFS&M, all with sand beds, plenum on 150, ect.

Sounds like a plan.

Sounds legit, but when I was starting my first tank, Marine Fish is the store that suggested I use a sand bed. I guess I'll just ask them why they don't practice what they preach next time I'm in there.

That bare bottom in the back of the store was already set up when they bought the store.
