I mixed up 3 tablespoons of Fiji Gold in some tank water and pured it in my tank last night. The water was seriously cloudy for several hours and I had to turn off the skimmer, but after the dust settled, everything looked pretty good. I have noticed already a bit more
polyp extension from my two walt smith colonies from the raffle, but that may also be due to their continuing acclimation to my tank.
what I'm really curious about, though, is whether or not anyone experienced the following scenario:
After about 20 minutes, I checked my Ph monitor and it was reading really high, like around 8.8. Then, after another 10 or 15 minutes, the pH dropped to about 7.9 or 8.0. after another 15 minutes, it was back to normal at around 8.2.
I can't say what cuased this, or if it had anything to do with the fiji gold--the only other thing that could have entered my tank at the time was topoff water, which is buffered to a pretty high pH, but only drips in very slowly. Maybe the two could have interacted?
Well the only visible effect of this dramatic swing among my tank inhabitants was some minor polyp retraction in some euphyllias. Everyone else, included fish, appeared fine (these fish are the toughest of the tough, though, having survived just about every extreme of temperature, Ph, and salinity swing possible!)
anyhow, I will watch closely next time I add the stuff, but was wondering if anyone noticed something similar, or could explain it. Thanks!
