OT: Please keep my family in your thoughts
I grew up in the small MS town of Picayune on the LA-MS border near the coast. You may know by now where I'm going with this...many of my immediate family members still live there, and they are about to get slammed by a Cat 5 hurricane. Being accustomed to hurricanes and having more animals than should be allowed , they are riding out the storm as we had always done. However, only my father has ever experienced a Cat 5 storm (Camille in 69) and I'm worried about them. I'll be driving "home" next weekend to be with them, but until then, I'd like to ask you all to keep them and the other residents of the area in your thoughts. It's going to be a very difficult and dangerous time for them over the next few weeks at least.

Ms. K,
Know that I have asked my friends and family to place special prayers for both your family and everyone that is in this storms path. I am sure that your family will be safe. Please let us know if there is anything that either you or your family needs.
Kevin

Thank you all so much! They were preparing today, and I'm sure everything will be fine with them. That just doesn't keep all the worries at bay. I think the main problem they're going to face will be the aftermath...no electricity or phone and property damage. The house has withstood many, many canes but not a Cat 5. I suspect they'll lose some or all of their outdoor sheds and storage houses and I expect the vehicles to sustain some damage. It will be very emotional for me to return next weekend I'm sure. I don't know what kind of damage to expect.

Know what you're saying, I grew up in South Louisiana, and have a good bit of family still there.

Rob and RecReef, I'll be thinking of your families. I'll be driving down this weekend, so if there is anything I can do to help or that you'd like to send your family, let me know.

Have either of you heard from your families? I have not heard from mine, but my older sister heard from them briefly (maybe a minute before signal was lost). They are "ok" but may be trapped? I think this means that the road is blocked, but I'm not sure. I've been trying to find information online about Picayune and Pearl River County. There are a few blogs running right now, and from what I have read on them, my hometown was completely destroyed. I read a report that all of the schools are "gone" or severely damaged. I'm glad my family is ok, but I think their lives will be very difficult for the next few months. They're almost certainly going to all be without work. My dad works in Biloxi, my sister works in Slidell, and my mom works at the school in Pearl River County.
Anyway, I know other people have family in southern LA and MS, and I hope your families are alright.

Tagging along with this thread. My thoughts are with all the families who are either down there or have family members down there. I cannot believe the utter devastation from this...

Well my prayers go out to those down in South Louisanna. I know at work my company is working hard to help provide relief and aid to some of our southern brothers and sisters.
We have donated to:
