My tank hit 88 degrees! Nothing damaged.
Last week I forgot that I had turned off the fans in my hood (3x250W DE). When I arrived at home, I glanced at the thermo guage and saw 88.1! I did a double take and thought my it was an error, so I opened the stand doors to look at the temp guage on my fan contoller - 88 too!
Surprisingly, everything looked fine - the only thing I noticed is that my fish were overly excited.
Slowly, overnight I reduced the temperature 4 degrees. Over the next day, I reduced it another 4 degrees.
Everything's fine! I think the key is fluctuations/changes in temp (and other parameters for that matter) should be very gradual.
