Mangroves at the Dec. meeting

Hi all,

I recently bought several mangroves (I had to buy 12). I only need a couple. They are Red Mangroves and most have nice roots already starting. If anyone has a green star polyp to trade, "you can have the first picks of the litter". A mushroom or devils hand gets second. The rest (or all if no one has anything to trade) I will give away as I only need one or two.

As a note: mangroves are EASY to take care of and will do wonders for your tank if you have a sump or fuge or other tank for them.

I'd be interested in one for my sump. I may have a small piece of GSP i can bring as well. Can you tell me (us) how you have yours "planted" and what sort of lighting you have on it?

No problem, if you can make it great, If ou can't,I can save a couple and get them to you in the next week or so. They are in my sump and will be fine.

I'll be there and have on or two for you.

They are really easy. A lot of people float them (with a piece of styrofoam) and let them grow in the water column, until the roots hit substrate. But that can take a long time. THEY GROW SLOWLY. I have taken a plastic container like a plastic cup and put it in the sump. This has the effect of raising the substrate closer to the surface with out me having a DSB. You can let them go for a while then replant them at your leisure.

They don't need much light. I have raised them on nothing more that difussed sunlight or with a daylight UV. If you reverse light your sump with a single bulb and have a little natural light. they will be fine.

be careful though, you will burn them with too strong lighting. That is why you rarely see them in the main.
