January at Petland

We all thank Tom Wyatt for his introduction to the Calcium chemistry balance going on in our tanks. I am glad it went as well as it did with all the aviary backtalk. When we ask Tom back again I hope we can find a nice quiet church. This subject is one that is going to be hard for me without a school course in chemistry but it is obviously very important to the corals we keep.

I also think the 2004 Officers did well, signing up a new sponsor, Petland, videotaping the presentation, getting the laptop and video projector coordinated, even coming out when sick to register new members. I especially want to say how nice the 2004 calendar appears. A lot of work payed off in a quality item, something that will make a lofty standard for next year's edition.

Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make our first meeting of 2004 a real pleasure.

Thanks to Petland and Tom. After hearing Tom speak and reading his writings over the years it's starting to sink in. But I don't have the background so I'm a little slower.

Nice to see everyone last night.

I also would like to mention that it was a fantastic showing of the club and please let me know if anyone needs an email copy of the materials that Tom provided along with his lecture.

Ray, you may want to email a copy to Rob so that he can add that material on our Web site if Tom's ok with that.

I too would like to thank Tom for his discussion. It was great. It's been a long time since I've thought that much about chemical equations. :-)

Did want to ask, was Tom the one who was going to provide the calcium calculator, or was someone else going to post a link to get it from? That seemed like a very useful tool to have.

Again, thanks everyone!

Chris

Tom offered to email the calcium calculator. You can send him a PM or email through TRT.

Bob I'll ask Tom tonight to make sure but I doubt he will have a problem with it. Once I know for sure, I'll email the info to Rob.

Thanks for the kudos on the meeting and the talk, too bad we had soooo much bird background going, but thanks to wendy and her bird shushing crew, the noise level dropped to acceptable levels. It is always a pleasure to come to Atlanta for the meetings. Bob, no problem on the outline, I would rather you post that than try posting notes on the topic, as it is really so technical that a misquote may have a major impact on the understanding of the topic. Chris (Mafiaman) had suggested doing a repeat before one of the summer meets (a/c mandatory) starting about 90 minutes before the business meeting. Not a problem for me.

Thanks again for all the great comments! It is always a pleasure to share the knowledge for a better understanding of what drives the events in our systems.

Thank you all for the warm welcome.
Sorry I did not get to talk w/ all there but looking forward to the next meeting.
Great job Tom, I'm off to buy a calcium reactor...LOL. You gave me better knowlage of just what the hell all that testing I've been doing means & how they all relate to each other.
See ya'll next month.

As promised, here is the link to Andy Hipkiss's Calcium Calculator for correcting Calcium and alk levels prior to beginning supplementation with a balanced additive:

Andy Hipkiss' Calcium/Alkalinity Calculator

Andy has a great site overall, enjoy browsing his site.

Rather than answer individual questiions (many have been duplicates, Please post your questions on the talk either in this forum or the main discussion forum. I WILL answer them, and you will get input from others that may have good resolutions as well.

Thanks again for all the great comments on the presentation!

hth.
