GA Aquarium Fish ID?? and fish selection Question
The purple one in the middle???? Anthis...or something (spelling)
Anyone know if these are hardy.
Other question, Anyone know why the Reef Tank at the GA doesn't have a larger variety of tangs or Angels?
No Power Blues, Achilles, Majestic, Emperior Angels etc. Are they planning on adding more variety? Or did they only want real Hardy and nice fish???
There was abut 500 yellow tangs and Regal tangs.

I believe the purple fish is an Anthias. I had good luck with them when I had them. They need to be fed 3x a day and they are jumpers as well. FS&M usually has the purple anthias in stock.

I agree that it is an Anthias, but I didn't have success with mine since as Mike points out "they need to be fed 3x a day" because they have an extremely small stomach and are active swimmers and therefore must be fed several times a day.
Make sure that the one that you get is eating before getting it home since some can be finicky eaters.
If you get more than one, please make sure that you only get one male and the rest females.
Good luck Chad in your decision.
Bob

I figured it was a Anthias, but what kind? "Purple anthias"? or does it have another name?

You might have a pretty established tank with lots of plankton floating around. In a sterile tank, they need to be fed several times a day for long-term success.

I was reading your post when Bruce Carleson walked by - there are alot more tangs and angels planned - including the ones you mentioned - but again, the tank is only a few months old. There is an Emperor in the first tank in the Tropical Diver, though.

I have a beautiful female purple anthias for couple months and have feeding her once a day. However, she eat nothing but live food. Cost me $3 a week to feed her. A small price compare to $50,000 a year to feed about 2 dozens of the Dragon Leaf fishes at the aquarium.

Have you tried feeding spectrum pellets. That is what all my anthias ate and it has everything in it that they need to stay bright colored.

By the way, the fish in your picture is not purple queen anthias. Purple Queen Anthias has a bright purple/pink color. The females are also bright purple in color but also have a yellow line on their back. The information screen at the aquarium identified the fish in your picture as Scalefin Anthias. However, I looked at some pictures of the Scalefin Anthias in the internet and they are nothing like it. I must click on a wrong fish when I were at the aquarium.

It's a male squamipinnis (lyretail or scalefin) anthias...purple variant. The lighting in the tank makes it appear more purple than pink. This is the only specie of anthias in this exhibit right now. The garden eel exhibit has barlett's anthias.

I have one anthia. It eats ANYTHING I puy in the tank. He eats once a day and is huge. He has been in the tank for a year now. So I don't agree with the 3 times a day rule.
