Species Extinctions in Our Backyard -

Dr. Paul D. Johnson, Research Scientist,
Tennessee Aquarium Research Institute
May 20, 2003 at 7 p.m.
Auditorium
Did you know that Georgia is one of four states in the U.S. with more species of freshwater mollusks than anywhere else in the world? Unfortunately, many of these species are threatened and are on the cusp of extinction. Dr. Paul Johnson, of the Tennessee Aquarium Research Institute has done extensive research in the Coosa River basin and other Southeastern watersheds. He will share with us the status of freshwater mussels in our state, what is being done to save species and why their recovery is so important. In conjunction with our special exhibition, Pearls: A Natural History, Dr. Johnson will also discuss the significance of the commercial pearling industry in the Southeast and how mussel populations are being affected.
