Downdraft Skimmer

Okay, Okay I went and did it...I violated Andy's First rule of Skimmers, Once it is adjusted, don't screw with it.

I have an ETSS Reef Devil Downdraft Skimmer with a Mag 7 pump. It was providing a lot of skimmate, but leaking kinda bad. So I taped up one of the unions, and had to readjust it.

For the water level to go up in it, I have to open the exhaust valve from the outlet, and vice versa.

The problem is now , to get the water level up high enough to push bubbles up the column, I get a water spray from the air intake. I added about 3 foot length of tygon tubing to avoid getting my floor wet, but I see about an inch of water coming in the tygon tubing. I reduced output flow and the water level goes down, but I can't see any skimmate nor even any bubbles in the riser column. Think the skimmer is now broke?

Well I was bumping this back up. I am at a loss for what to do to adjust this skimmer. the Manufacturer suggests that I put it in the sump, even though it was touted for out of sump and in-sump operation. Right now so much water leaks out of the air valve that my carpets are getting flooded.
