Question

Double Ended Vs Mogul Metal Halide

I was researching the web for Metal Halide lighting for my new 120 Gallon tank and I ran across a fact that I haven't heard before. The web site I got the information from was http://www.innovativelights.com. They are saying that a double ended bulb requires UV blocking Glass but the Mogul socket bulbs doesn't mention this. Here is the quote from the web site: (Please note: Do not operate HQI (Double Ended) bulbs without the use of UV filtering glass. These bulbs emit UV radiation which is harmful to humans and tank inhabitants alike.) When I was looking at the Mogul socket bulbs there was no mention of this. Has anyone ever heard of this? Thanks, Curtis

Yep that is true from what I have heard.

I have always used mogul bulbs and they seem to come in more color options with alot of different brands out there.

I have seen the hqi's cheaper though and they do last longer (I think)...

I believe HQIs are newer maybe? but yeah its a lighter market on them. they are supposed to be brighter too though.

plus now pheonix makes a 14k HQI only bulb which is supposed to be the greatest thing since sliced bread. I got them, and though I have nothing to compare to, Im inclined to agree.

From what I have seen the 150watt 10k HQI is about as bright as a 250watt 10k mogul MH. As far as the UV, I think the outer glass on the mogul bulb blocks UV and the HQI bulb lacks that.

if you look at a mogul you will see what looks to be an HQi inside the bulb.
yes the mogul does filter itself.
check out SAnjay's reef site and he has more light info than one could imagine.
ill get a link later tonite.....if im not busy plumbing my new tank that is!

HQI's are brighter, they come in just as many colors as any mogul bulb. They also burn hotter. A mogul bulb has it's UV coating on the bulb itself where the HQI does not. Being so one must use a UV filtering lens if running HQI's. HQI's come in 150-watts, 250-watts and 400-watts.
