Cuke nightmare

I bought a seacuke and let it float for 45 minutes. I woke up today and found my oyster my lawnmower blenny and all my emeral crabs dead and my bubble anomones near death. My cuke had died overnight and decided to take everyone else with him. Makes me ticked is the LFS I bought him from I called and explained it didnt look right in the tank that night and the answer I got was just keep an I on it. I had no idea that it would poison my water. ohh my hammer coral died also. What a costly leason. So I have a fancey cuke comming to me when we meet thursday for the critters pick up anybody who wants it can have it. By the way it was the green and pink tipped kind I had so be careful out there.

****, I'm so sorry to hear that! I have heard rumors of the dreaded cucumber death plague, but I had not heard any actual stories. Did anything make it?

I feel your pain, as I know what it is to have a tank acciddent take your favorite fish and corals with it. Be careful with the colorful cukes, for they are known to be toxic, and can kill everything in the tank upon its death.

If there is anything I can do to help you, please let me know.

cukes usually spew out their digestive innards when frightened as a defense mechanism and in the wild they can usually recover. This is almost never true in the aquarium. I had one do this in a 29 gallon for unknown reasons after being very happy for like 8 months. Luckily I caught mine in time and was able to save the rest of the tank. I love cukes but they are always a wildcard. sorry to hear about your loss.

My story...

Sunday last cleaned protein skimmer, changed 5 gals out of 58 gal tank, cleaned power heads. Everything nominal.
Came back six hours later and noticed skimmer had overflowed. Cleaned that up then noticed all fish dead! Noticed whispy treads on few rocks. Checked chemistry - only ammonia and nitrate higher than normal.
I think I was cuke nuked!
Symptoms:
  • Only fish died.
  • Skimmer overflowed - released toxins reduce water surface tension causing overflow
  • Filiments on rocks - these are cuke respiratory filiments expelled
Cuke nuke is most likely explanation. My dealer will take back the sea cucumber, but damage is done.
Does anyone know how long it takes for these toxins to disipate, or what actions are needed to remove them from the tank?
