Cleaning

My wife and I want to have our carpets cleaned and I am concerned about the chemicals that are used since our tank is on carpet in the living room (and the area in front of it is one of the worst spots...poor planning on our part but already done). Has anyone had any problems with this in the past, or is there a preferred method of cleaning? I assume that if we just have the carpets steam cleaned, we will have no problems. But I guess I am unsure if they add any chemicals to the water before making the steam.

Suggestions?

Have you thought about renting a steam cleaner and doing it yourself?

Clean with caution.

My Minibow 7 sits on a counter between the kitchen and the living room.

One Saturday morning everything was kicking butt. I gave the kitchen an extra good cleaning --- you know --- the kind where it smells clean. By Sunday morning I had lost 3 or 4 sps corals and a few other corals were just barely hanging on.

Moral of my story ---- If you can smell it your corals are eating it.

And yes they use chemicals in the water when steam cleaning. At the very least make sure you are home supervising the cleaning around the tank. I might also consider having a large amount of carbon in the tank just in case. You could also shut down all the pumps/skimmers ect.... so that there is less agitation in the water air interface. That should minimize the amount chemicals that can get into the tank. Open all the windows in the room and keep them open until the carpets are fully dry and the "clean" smell is gone.

Since odors are absorbed/transmitted into the water thru the air, I think that placing a plastic tarp/cover over the entire aquarium would help minimize the absorption of these odors.

I have the rear portion of my tank in my laundry room... the front side is viewable from the living room (in wall tank.)

Anyway, I have never noticed any problems when washing clothes, even whites with clorox bleach.

I have always wondered about this though... but no problems to date.
