Clams....

I stopped by CBA last night and wow was there ever a selection of clams!!! They had to have over a hundred...easily!! I couldn't resist, so I picked up one of the little guys. I was wondering how long does it usually take for them to open back up? My guy is a little open, but not completely. Any ideas??

with proper lighting, water conditions...shouldnt take long. I just bought 4 from a less than outstanding store immediately after they received a new shipment, made a 900 mile drive in 22 hours and mine opened up within hours after getting them in my tank with the other clams I have.

We bought a little Maxima from CBA about 3 weeks ago. He opened up right away. What kind of lighting do you have? You may not have enough for him. CBA has theirs under MHs and that's what we have.

Ours sits on the sand about 24" from the lights. We've tried and tried to get him to attach to a piece of LR, but he keeps rebelling and throwing himself back on the sand (must be a toddler, or a teenager!). We finally gave up and let him stay there.

Also, we have learned that at this tender young age, clams need the Phyto every day. We have a 135g, so we dump one ounce of DTs Phytoplankton in the tank every other day, and target feed on the off days. We cut a plastic bottle about 3-4" from the top (enough to cover the clam). We place it over the clam, and squirt about 1ml of Phyto into the bottle neck with a syringe. We've done this for our Open Brain too, and they are both doing great!

HTH,
Cat

Hmm that's odd. My tank is under 2 175w 14k mh's. He's been opening up a little more lately, so I guess he's still adapting to the environment.

I also bought 2 "Baby" clams last weekend. My wife called while I was out of town and told me that something had eaten one of them (Wednesday). I came home today and the other was gone as well. What gives? The only things in my tank are:

5 Pepermint Shrimp
2 Fire Shrimp
2 Cleaner Shrimp
1 Coral Banded Shrimp
3 Serpent Starfish
4 Emerald Crabs
2 Queen Conchs
4 Green Chromis
1 Lawnmower Blenny
And several assorted snails and Blue and Red Legged Crabs

In your opinion, what should I get rid of since my wife loves Clams.
Thanks for your help
Ken
