Captive Bred Corals

Hi, there. I posted recently on reefcentral asking if anyone had experiences with this company (Captive Bred Corals). I got one reply, suggesting that people in this club may have taken a trip to their facility, and that I might get more info if I posted here. So, here I am! Their website makes some pretty bold claims, and I must admit some suspicion. They claim to have expert personnel, but do not name them. They claim to be 'the' authority, but I am having trouble finding anyone who has heard of them. Their online catalog lumps torch, frogspawn, anchor and hammer corals into one entry; while they are all the same genus and have similar needs, I have never seen this done before, and most hobbyists I know see them as quite distinct animals.

They are, however, one of the few vendors I can find that seems to carry captive bred LPS corals. (Having said that, CBC doesn't even explicitly say that their LPS corals are captive bred/propagated). Does anyone here have any exprerience with this company?

Captive Bred Corals

The Atlanta Reef Club took a field trip to visit back in Dec 2002. At the time they had just moved and had been at the new location only a month. It is a large [for retail] facility with several coral grow-out tanks and live rock curing vats. These used a modified algae turf scrubber system to create water/wave motion. Very nice but the corals were acclimating rather than actively growing back then.
The owner was knowledgable and experienced. At the time the web page was not functional so if you are reading it, the info would have to be current from 2003. We were treated to a frag demo with pieces to take home gratis and offered discounts on floor stock. All the retail corals and fish looked healthy and the showroom tank was gorgeous. The frags I was given have done very well in a friend's tank.
If you lived in Tenn. no question but this would be the store to visit. On-line pricing and delivery is something I can not evaluate.

Hi Jeff,

Having been to Aquatic Wildlife (the name they now have the rights to use [formerly CBC]) 5 times, they specialize in propagating SPS, but they also have fragged LPSs such as glaxia and blastamosa (sp?) among others.

Aquatic Wildlife is the original name from the early '90s. Since at least the early 90s they have been successfully fragging corals and reselling them to the public.

AW was sold, I believe, twice and then sold for a third time to its current owner (Greg Wilson) about 3+ yrs ago, but he used the CBC name at that time. Within the last 6 mos he acquired the full rights to using the AW name.

AW was originally located in Cleveland, TN and in Aug '02 they moved to their current location. Unfortunately, they lost ~60%+ of their mother colonies and so they are trying to find replacements and reestablish their frag inventory.

Some of the folks at AW have some ties or history with Eric Borneman, Dana Riddle, and the late Noel Curry of Scientific Corals which was based in N. Atlanta.

In addition to the Atlanta Reef Club having been there officially three times and having been treated exceptionally well each time, the Alabama Reef Club (found on the ReefCentral website under Reef Club Forum) also recently visited them in Feb'03.

In addition, if you do a search on ReefCentral on "Captive Bred Corals" or "Aquatic Wildlife" you'll learn more about their past, than the present operation.

The folks are nice and they have at least one guy who has an incredible knowledge about corals.

I hope this answers your questions.

Bob

Captive Bred Corals aka Aquatic Wildlife is in Chattanooga, TN, not Lawrenceville.
