Question

Can mealworms be fed to anemones &/or fish?

I have reptiles therefore I raise mealworms. Has anyone ever tried feeding these to fish or anemones?

I picked out some white mealworms last night (ones that just shed their outer shell and are extra soft) and gave two to my least expensive anemone. The anemone seemed to enjoy wrestling with the wiggling worm. My wrasses went nuts, swiped a worm and played keep-away until it was divided into bits.

This morning no one is dead.

Is there any problem with doing this regularly 1-2 times a week?

Don't know about a fish tank, but I put mealworms out for bluebirds. It's quite a treat for them since there's not many bugs out yet.

I try not to feed terristrial foods to my critters. I have fruit flies and meal worms for my froggies and carnoverious plants. With the exception of killie fish, those foods are specifically for those critters. I would hesitate with an anemone, specially since when they go down hill, it is normally too late to save them. BTW, I did feed my archerfish crickets on occassion. (I tried to train them to shoot crikets).

I also raise mealworms for my siren, I have tried putting little chunks into my tank, no one was interested... I would say in general that its probably "ok" but I wouldnt reccomend it because it might be difficult to digest, and it has foreign bacteria and other things that arent naturally found on a reef.

I feed mealworms to the bluebirds too. I'm just curious as to how you raise them. They are a bit pricey to buy.

to raise meal worms is simple, you need:

A 5 gal bucket
a few pounds of crushed oat bran
Some banana peels
A slice of old bread or two
Some meal worm larvae

Put the oat bran in as a substrate, then put the food items in (you can mix it up with the food, just use watery fruits veggies)
Then go to the pet store, buy some mealworms, put them in and give them at least two weeks to reproduce, They will turn into black beetles as adults and lay eggs, after a few days youll see tiny lil worms.
When buying the worms at a pet store, dont get the gigantic superworms, as I have found out they dont readily reproduce.
