Isn't the california coast line cold water? It comes down from the arctic. Not the right kind of critters for a typical reef tank.
Most of our stuff comes from south pacific, indo-pacific, and carribean.

I've heard that L.A. has some of the places for "cherry-picking" corals in the county; after all, that's where most of the stuff collected from the indo-pacific comes into our country. You might want to post a thread on RC to get suggestions for good LFSs and cherry-picking shops in and around L.A.
Now that you've brought it up, I'm kind of curious; let us know what you find

Well if you can get into a wholeseller like Pacific Aqua Farms (Dr. Mac) you can do some cherry picking. They are located on the infamous 104th Street right outside LAX with many other wholsellers.

I wouldn't go and tank anything from Cali ocean back home. You will know what I mean when you get there.

I actually know what you mean there. Putting something in your tank from the ocean around LA would be the same as dropping something from lanier into your tank.. I didnt like the pacific at all. Cold, and smelly.

When I went to San Diego about 6 years ago, the coastal tidal pools were beautiful little "tanks" that weren't too cold (though I admit I did not have a thermometer with me). We found an octopus in one of them (very cool) and they were littered with what looked like palm-sized ricordia of some sort. The ocean there is definitely alot colder than east coast, though.
More importantly, does California not have a law prohibiting collection without a permit/license? I know FL does (and has some really stiff fines for illegal catching, IIRC).
