IMO putting it in a creek will "cure" it much faster since the water is constantly moving and new water is getting added pretty much every second, so its like getting a waterchange every second.

I can get you pics if you're still interested... in my opinion, it looks way better than DIY rocks.
I'm not sure but does freshwater bacteria mix with saltwater bacteria? I'm not sure if it'd cause any harm but I'd feel weird introducing it to the tank.

Ill have to say that Im not a big fan of the looks of DIY either, tho I have seen a couple (as in 2) examples where it did look good.
As far as purchasing... I really like the base rock that they have at Marine Fish.... tho you dont seem very motivated for a drive.

I have some rock as well. Its reef bones base rock. It has been in my tank for over two years so its obviously live rock now. I can sell it for $2.50 a lb and I have over 140 lbs of it right now. I have huge pieces 10-15lbs down to small stuff. Some have corals on them though. If my wife excepts the job with the Red Cross in the morning in Chatanooga, tank has to come down so we can move.
I have alot of corals as well, 11 headed torch, 10lbs of xenia, purple tip acro surrounded by white pom pom xenia, elephante ear mushrooms, gsp's, and a huge birds nest (pociallapora).

i have got some advice you could use. First of all forget everything about the crushed coral and crushed oyster shell. All you need is portland cement and rock salt (which can be purchased at your local supermarket). Various sizes of rock salt is encouraged. Now mix your cement, then mix about 3 parts rock salt to every 1 part cement. Let it dry for 24hrs and toss it in a bucket of freshwater and have something in there for water movement (powerhead) and try and change the water as often as possible. Over the 1-6 weeks the salt will disolve away leaving sweet looking pores and crevices, *NOTE* just because the salt on the outside of your rock has dissolved, doesnt mean the salt on the inside has, thus giving maybe 2 weeks. For every batch you make, make about 5 little rocks, this way you can crack the little ones open over a period of time to see if any salt is left (dont make them to small, more like baseball sized for the ones you will crack open). oh and another thing. dont make like 200lbs your first day. this is more of a trial and error thing. even though the incredients i gave your were right for me, doesnt mean they will turn out right for you, the ingredients themselves arnt gonna change, but the amount of each you put in will vary. Hope this helps you out.
