atlantic rock...

a few weeks ago i happened into some free live rock. unfortunately a peice or few happened to be atlantic rock. not only that but one of the peices also happened to have casiopia jellfish babies growing on it.

roughly 70 lbs of rock has them growing as anomones and changing into jellyfish , taking out my blonde naso, mandarin, and coral catfish.

the suggestions i have gotten so far are:

raise the salinity off the scales,
cover the tank for at least 48 hours,
or dry the rock in a closed styrofoam cooler for 24 hours.

i have riased the salinity and covered the tank. which has slowed down the movements and growth. i have also dropped the temperature down to 60 degrees.

if anyone has any ideas on how to take the jellyfish out for once and for all (without having to dry the rock out and starting over) please let me know

thank you

Why do you want to get rid of them so bad??
(maybe there is something you know about them that I do not that makes them so harmful?)

Anyways, they will not tolerate copper or high nitrates in the water, and since its body is composed of 95 to 98% water, sudden changes in salinity or pH can have radical consequences.

So salt or PH... No3 will kill them too.

I run into thses Jelly Fish all the time when diving in South FL. The locals tell me that they are not a problem (at least not for humans) they don't sting (allegedly). Do they harm your tank inhabitents?

I think instead of increasing salinity, you may try to decrease it. When we visited Panama City Beach, there were a lot of JF in that area (and I tend to think salinity is lot higher close to the beach). My point is, they are probably not effected by what you are doing, but instead, treat it like you would treat ich.... Then again, I have zero experience with JF in my tank. But interesting to know what works otu for you. Good Luck.

the fish i had in the tank were a coral catfish, a mandarin dragonet (goby), and a blonde naso tang. they died about the same time the jelly's started showing up. all i can figure is that they ate them off the live rock (the jellys start as clear/white anemones and let go a few weeks later)

as far as stinging, i dont know. i do know at high tide in the fall , savannah has some mean jellys that can leave some rough marks. took my family weeks to get rid of the burn lines. (anywho)

thanks for the info.
