Question

Anyone know where to get black PVC pipe?

I'm looking for some black rigid PVC pipe in three quarter and 1 inch diameters. Has anyone found any? Prefer local, but would mailorder if need be.

Thanks.

Never seen such a thing, but there is a gray pvc used in rigid electrical conduit. Includes nice long curved pieces called sweeps. The only black pipe is used in sprinklers and it is a nylon/vinyl not PVC and of course there is the 2"-4" ABS used in drain pipes.

Savko now carries black flex pvc....Its not on their site though. Last I heard they only have it in 1". I don't think you can find black pvc that small. I looked for some for a potato launcher one time and I could only find 2-4" as well.

Check them out

Hmm... no black PVC in small sizes, but check out that clear PVC.... that might be an option for some applications.

I made one that was about 6' high with the charcole ignitor ( one of those clickable torch deals) with regular white pvc. My neighbor always wondered why he would find raw potato halfs in his pool over 100 yards from my house back in Alabama. I hate living around the metro area, you just can't shoot things like that in your back yard. What did you use for fuel Tobbob? A shot of Aqua-Net hair spray and WD-40 always did the trick for me!

I've found a few internet suppliers who have black flexible PVC (including Aquatic Ecosystems). Also found one supplier who sells black rigid PVC, but they're in England. You're right, I may have to go with black flexible PVC or dark gray schedule 80 PVC.

Don't know if this is allowed as it does have prices but as I don't see them competing with any thing related to this site what the hell.

Black PVC sizes available

They don't sell over the web anymore and they require you to call them up. Still they come highly reccomended by some associates of mine

Thanks Dragoon, I think I'll give them a call.

I'm planning a new tank, and some of my plumbing for a closed loop system will probably come over the top edge of the tank. I think black PVC would be a little less noticable than the usual white schedule 40 PVC, even after corraline grows on it.

Check out this site.

http://www.mcmaster.com/

Note: They specify "dark gray" and "gray". The dark gray may be close enough to black to fill your needs. They also have a wide verity of fittings. If you search the site you may find some other material, in black, that will work for you.

A long time ago I was working with PVC on a project not related to aquariums at all. I seem to remember reading that you could easily dye pvc any color you want by using ritt dye (you can buy it in any fabric store). You boil up some water, disolve the dye in it, and then boil your pvc peices in it. It was supposed to be permanent. I don't remember the exact procedure - if you google it you might come up with something. I don't know about the toxicity of the dye, but I would guess it would be ok after thorougly rinsing off the residue...I mean, its approved for use in our clothing, and we wear it against our skin all day with no bad effects...

When I was younger I made one that was shoulder mounted and could fire a potato thru a corrugated shed. I used a grill electric light as the trigger and there was nothing like it, about four feet of fury it was.
