Any LFS worth checking out in Athens?

Title says it all, also are they near the college?

I highly recommend Athens Aquarium and Fish Store on Hawthorne Rd (across from Alps Rd, behind Checkers & Walgreens). They specialize in fish and aquatic invertebrates...no furry friends here! I buy from them religiously. Prices are reasonable (not as cheap as online of course) and they are very knowledgeable. Live rock is a bit expensive, but it's expensive at all the stores in Athens. They always steer me in the right direction and never let me buy something that I can't properly care for. Of course, I always ask first, and I feel that they are honest with me. They get new shipments in every Thursday evening. They are great people!

Athough I have never been to "THE PET STORE" in Athens, they are one of our sponsors and I have heard several good things about them. The owner is Glen and its located at 3190 Atlanta Hwy, Athens, GA 30606. Their number is 706-546-9906.

The Pet Store is probably my second choice. I tend to buy more dry goods from them. They carry products for all manner of pets. The prices are a bit more expensive (not sure about ARC discount), and the saltwater livestock is minimal. They are helpful and friendly, however, and have gone above and beyond to give me silly little things that I wanted. There is also a Petland on Epps Bridge, same shopping center as Home Depot. It's quite small, but has a variety of pets for sale. Oh, and a Pet Supplies Plus just opened on Alps Rd behind Inoko Japanese Steakhouse. Livestock is minimal (No SW fish) and prices are a bit high. I don't know of any others besides those four.

HTH,
Alicia

The petland is Athens is pretty solid for a chain type store. I like the pet store and more as well, you just need to pick your time right. They seem to turn over a lot of inventory fairly quickly. They have pretty good prices too.

I've never been to the other two. DO you have addresses to them?

I don't have addresses. I always have to look up adds and numbers online, bc I'm not in Athens. I just know how to get to them. PSP is on Alps Road and AAFS is on Hawthorne Road, directly across from Alps Road at the same intersection off Atlanta Highway (Broad Street). I can give directions, but no addies, sorry.

To get to either Athens Aquarium or Pet Supplies Plus, starting from the Pet Store: from the Pet Store parking lot, turn left on Atlanta Highway (78). Continue on Atlanta Highway until you come to the Alps Road intersection.

To get to AAFS, turn left at the light (Alps Rd intersection) onto Hawthorne Road, the small street that runs beside Checkers. ON Hawthorne, turn right at the first light onto the street that runs behind Checkers and Walgreens. AAFS is on the right.

To get to PSP, turn right at the light onto Alps Road. PSP is located in a shopping center on the left (behind Chili's I think).

From Petland, the directions are basically the same. Epps Bridge Road combines with 78 (traveling toward Alps Rd). Once you get onto 78, directions are the same.

Thanks for the help everybody, I went to Athens Aquariums and also made it to Petland by Krogers. I was very impressed by the huge tank in the back of Athens Aquarium, they also had some nice Angels when I was there. Petland had a Blue Ribbon Eel and the guy working there said it was eating ghost shrimp, But I didn't have time to see it eat. Didn't see any unusual corals, but Petland did have a nice blue and green acro. Didn't bring anything home though.

Also, do you have Pseudoscorpions in Georgia? Cause I just found one in my kitchen, and they aren't native to Minnesota.

Ooh, cool! I found one in my bathroom once in Alabama. They're feisty little buggers. Just don't let one sting you! I did some reading on them years ago---the genera found here in the south (thin pincers, thick tails) are among the more venomous.

I called the vet that was teaching the class I went to, and she told me that she lost part of her finger to a pseudoscorpion sting.

Bet that hurt! They're not deadly or anything, but pack a painful little punch..or at least that's what I read. I have no first hand experience...thank goodness!
