Age old Question

I am looking to upgrade my tank from a 72G to a 100 gallon tank. Are there any true advantages to getting a acrylic tank as opposed to a glass tank? And how do I find a good tank? I see plently of acrylic tanks and wonder if it worth the extra bucks. Please let me know. thanks!

Two thoughts Ray,

One is that Acrylic is lighter and I think sometimes look better because of the cool shapes.

Two is that Acrylic scratches easier.

Lisa wants me to go with acrylic for one other reason. She says that she has seen more glass tanks split as opposed to quality acrylic. (I mean by quality is that there are "cheaply" made tanks but it goes to say about glass as well I think).

have to agree with Ray about the cool shapes of acrylic but they do scratch a lot easier. somethin to consider.

whatever you get, just make sure it is a good quality tank (yuo DO get what you pay for)and that it has a warranty.. something you do not think about until you need it and then WISH you had it!!

and at that size.... you should consider the manufacturer's stand if you want the warranty to be valid

most of the acrylic aquarium shapes can also be found in glass now. Also higher quality glass aquariums have less lead than others and offer better clarity than other glass when a larger thickness is required. Glass also does not get a haze over time as some acrylics may unless they are buffed out. Glass tanks are always what I use if I want a reef tank or a tank with puffers or triggers. Other fish only systems without those guys do fine with acrylic so long as your careful scrubbing algae close to the sand.

I myself prefer glass....although the cool shapes are harder to find and more costly than the acrylics I dont have to worry about a scratch on the inside of the tank for the next 15 years or so.
