Discussion of the week ~Money Saving Tips~
Alright folks this weeks topic is Money Saving Tips. This should be a good one for our newer members, we can maybe help them save a little money on DIY or additive alturnatives, places to shop and so on. So let the talks begin.
here is a couple that I know for sure.
1. Dont start, find a cheaper hobby
2. Talk your friend inot starting a reef tank, that way you can spend his money and still get all the satisfaction.

Get a nearby friend addicted, spend together, and then plan vacations such that you never are both gone at the same time....
Works for us!
Oh, and every time we figure a way to save money, we also spend more because we are there....buying stuff....

Find a good LFS that will give you credit for coral frags and baby fish. We are paying for everything related to the hobby by doing this.

how to minimize if not eliminate your electric bills
1.) Set it up at your parents house.( they will pay for the power consumption)
2.) hack up your neighbor's electric meter.(ramphant here in the Philippines.
3.) convince your self that your MH will give enough light for the tank and your whole living room.
*i dont hack my neighbor's electric meter now i swear i quit doing it last night*

Spend the money on the right books, yes, even at $60/volume, and read this board a BUNCH before going to the LFS and buying on impulse or believing what they are telling you...
And ditto what Jeff said...don't compromise or you'll just spend it anyway and more so to correct it on down the road.

Research before you do anything. Especially equipment purchases. Buy the best the first time. Even if this means waiting. I'm on my third skimmer but I finally have one that works well.
Make your own food. I'm not sure if this saves money but it's fun and the fish love it.
Join your local reef club and become involved with your fellow reefers. Trade unused equipment with other reefers.

DIY
That has saved me lotsa money!!!
Sump, overflow, refugium, prop tank, ect.
Those 4 items purchased NEW would have made me BROKE.
Also, frag trading has saved me lots too!!!

Hey Jerel! That sounds suspiciously like the "I Don't Like Spam" of Monty Python fame
I'm still in the learning stage of saving money. It's sooooo tempting when you see that perfect whatchamacallit at the LFS. Or that coral beauty, or....

I'm using the bulk DI resin. I purchased it at www.resindepot.com and got 1 cubic foot of resin and 2 refillable cartridges for $150ish including shipping. That's 54lbs of resin! - enough to fill about 30 cartridges!
It takes a less than a minute to fill up the refillable cartridges and I do 2 at a time. This isn't "recharging" the old resins - just buying the resin in bulk instead of one cartridge at a time. No mess - no gloves or chemicals - VERY easy.
I would also restate what has been said several times earlier. Don't skimp on equipment up front. Buy the right piece of equipment the first time and you will save money overall both in the savings in equipment and the savings in the loss of livestock that you might have if you skimp on equipment up front.
FWIW, Nathan

Ok I have you all beat. Start a business in the same field so you can take your profits dump them into your tank only to write them off at the end of the year as a business expense.... Wooooow
