ahahahahah. I agree.
But to start, the most valuable thing I've learned here at TRT, AND in general is:
The importance of Water changes.
while there ARE successful tanks out there where frequent water changes are NOT done, they are rarer, and more than likely, an exception to the rule.
Having had fresh water tanks since I was 8, I knew what a water change was, but in honesty, it was something I only did MAYBE once every 6 months.
With Saltwater, I'd started with that same husbandry. But I'd learned here at TRT that frequent water changes will GREATLY increase your chances of a successful tank. That knowledge was reinforced almost everywhere else I've looked.

I agree alot of things. But the biggest thing for me is doing regular water changes. When it came to WC's I never would do any. just lazy and well if it working leave it alone, But now the tanks are doing so much better. But then also TRT helped me in a way as to meet people on line here and like a chain reaction on local forums. And got me into full time work with satlwater tanks and fish, and it seems like it just the start. Thank everyone and TRT!!!

I've learned to buy the right equipment the first time. I don't even want to think about how much I've spent on stuff that I had to replace a few months later. This also speaks to the other important thing I've learned: Have a plan. I would have been much better off researching and deciding what I wanted to keep before I ever bought a thing. Then I could've bought the right stuff the first time.

ME TOO!! Two/three months ago me and my micro algae were in ignorant bliss. About two months ago I was convinced PO4 was eventually going to get us all. One month ago I settled down when I learned where it goes and how it gets there. I suppose that would be a description the phosphate cycle?

Having been involved in this board since before day one, and other boards before that, i thought I was pretty up on stuff, heck I started with SW in the mid 70's
The longer I am on here the more I know I dont know, but I never stop learning
The truisms I have learned are Have a PLAN
Have Patience
and whatever you think its going to cost after writing out the plan, doing all the searching online and local, all the research, DOUBLE IT

one of the first things i learned here, was the no damsels for cycling. this was prolly the first thing that made start really thinking about what i was doing. this simple idea really started getting my head around what exactly is going on in our systems chemically. then it all went downhill from there.

BTW-the secound thing i learned from here, was that DSB's were the way to go regardless of the biotope you planned on keeping. this was back when i was still running a very shallow CC that i vacuumed when i remembered.
