Maintaining proper water balance with simple set ups. What does everyone do to keep alk, Ca and PH in line without buying a ton of electronics and equipment.
Maybe a laymens workshop on the relationship between these three seemingly complicated levels.

Tim, this is off track, But I will throw this out, Maybe a good one for Geoff. He is real good with DYI stuff, and I'm sure allot of other people also.
So I was thinking , For the DYI forum to have a series of projects, Like building a skimmer. Take 3 months, no contest but the first few week everyone can have the time to order or buy the supplies. PVC glue what ever. the mod will have the list. Then as an online group put it together. The tread can be for post to ask questions, post pictures and so on. Then can Change after that to CA reactor or what ever everyone wants and the Mod wants to do. I'm sure Greg will have to agree with this. I think it will help people that have a hard time doing DYI get better at it. You can move this tread if You like. Or If You want me to delete it I will and move it someplace else You can or I will , Hope You don't mind me putting this here.
By the way Tim, I love this tread You do and Thanks for a great Job

How about water chemistry 101, in real, real, simple laymens terms-then what to do when things go wrong-home remedies, what should be on hand etc., and then build on this with stuff you add to water, ie. food and different types-all the way to making your own...

All of those are great ideas so far, water balence and diy are great ones to focus on. (I will be paying close attencion)
Maybe a Intro to the different set-ups: ie DSB vs BB vs CC bio balls vs berlin method, all of these are intimidating to a new hobyist.
Maybe a beginers area called the starting block, or somthoing not derogatory to newbs like me will get the "lurkers" involved more.

we do have an archive for past topics here. we do not mind going over topics again, but we would like to put a little time between rehashes.
i know we get a lot of new people here, so i do not think we will be opposed to rehashing topics more frequently, but we would like more participation than lurking.

Vince...LOVE that idea. I'd like to see some DIY projects about electrical stuff. Installing GFI outlets, making those neat boxes with several plugs and switches, etc.
One idea I'd like to have for Discussion of the week here is...how the term "Reef Safe" is misleading, or vauge.
Sometimes Not Reef Safe means "will eat other fish", sometimes it means, "Will eat corals", sometimes it means "Will eat inverts", sometimes it means "Doesn't get along with specific other fish, sometimes it just means "Big guy who will eat/poop a LOT and makes keeping corals difficult", etc.
It's one of my big pet peeves in this hobby. You research a creature, and they say "Not reef safe" but don't eleaborate. Some critters, like the Mantis SHrimp, say "Not reef safe", but in actuallity, it really IS reef safe...IF you have no fish in there. Mantis don't bother corals..
I think it'd be neat to talk about what critters aren't considered reef safe, but talk about WHY...and how they MIGHT be reef-safe, if X conditions are present.

Tim, I think you do a great job of sensing when the thread has reached an end. Some go on longer, some don't....but you have a good sense of when it's time for a new one. Don't worry about this.
