what's that smell????


p-u! man, that is just sooo wrong! my 46gl sand bed reaks of death! nothing is as nasty as a sandbed is when you gotta remove one i don't ever want a dsb again. no way no how...

funny, when I scooped out a bit of the sand for transfe to seed the new sand bed, the old one smells of the ocean, it doesnt stink, but it was just ther first 2 to 4 cm... now the skimmer collector, THAT is something else...

I scooped out 6 inches of sand when I tore down the 135 and it didn't smell bad either. No black or grungy spots...but it had only been up a year.

1 inch down and the smell is "ocean breeze"
2 " and it's fishy!
3" kinda dizzying
4" and lower ..... yuck! rotten egg!!!!

You hit the jackpot! hydrogen sulfide! read more.....it might mean good somehow.

that what a live sand bed is all about
you want the sand to go anarobic (rotten eggs)
thats when it removes nitrates
just dont ever disturb it
