Are we talking about the typical detrital matter? Its a conglomeration of coral mucus, animal excretions, bacterial populations explosions, etc, etc... not to mention food for everything from amphipods to corals. The goal should be to keep it suspended, but there will always be a breakdown point in our captive environments; this material can not be completely utilized... it is continually broken down before or after consumption, but only to a point, then it is often utilized by something different and started on a new cycle. There is generally nothing on a reef that can't be used by something. The water is nutrient poor, but not the reef itself... And even in the wild, much of this material that can be leftover or still in various stages of being broken down is strained and decanted, and sent into inshore seagrass/mangrove or surf environments where it can be much further utilized.
