It might be a little longer depending on the sand. I used Southdown and it took days to clear up. If you add something like live sand or LR it will clear faster. HTH

well it's been a coupla hours now but i can start to see the two or three hunks of live rock i put into the tank. i started with 100lbs. of playsand and then added another 30lbs. of live sand; lfs ordered a bunch of sand just for me! then we haggled a bit on the price and i got it for $3/lb. they also ordered a bunch more corals, which i think was just to tempt me.

hopefully it'll clear up a bit more so i can start re-arranging the live rock in the morning.

When I moved into my 75 I put the new sand down first and pured water in a bowl to lessen disruption then added the old sandbed on top. By morning it was semi clear so I ran a fiter pad to get the last bit of silt out since I was under a brutal deadline

well, the new sand bed has been in for about 24 hours now and it's settling nicely. however, what's settleing is incredibly fine silt. i kinda expected this, but won't it get stired up every time that, say, one of the fish farts or something? i mean just blowing in the general direction of the tank whips up a sand storm. i'm guessing, hoping, that this is normal and it will all settle down.

i should be able to get the live rock back into the tank later this afternoon and the fish possibly tonight, though i may wait another day to get the fish put in. tomorrow (monday) i'll be ordering a live sand activator kit from ipsf. the live sand from the lfs i put in yesterday isn't exactly brimming with life, but it does have some. i saw a teeny-tiny star climbing the front of the tank, maybe an inch off the sand. it's just so cute!

Sounds like your right on schedule Hayday and doing the right way. I hear you with that fine silt on the top of the sand bed, and fish and everything else will disturb it. Something I did was to buy that pure white sugar sand and lay a 1/2 inch over the topo of the silt, your crittlers will have no problem moving through it, it will also keep the silt from floating all the time.

good luck

That's great, Hayday!
Everything sounds perfectly normal for this operation...it just takes a bit of time. The "fines" will eventually settle into the sanbed. It will take care of itself.
Good job!

ok, this is starting to scare me. everyone has bee telling me that i've been doing things correctly and everything sounds good. then, my thread gets referenced as one that should be read on the correct way to go about putting in a sand bed. i'm not comfortable with this. murphy is gonna get me and get me big.

48 hours later and i can barely make out the back of the tank. man, this is frustrating! everytime i go to rearrange the live rock whips up a new sand storm. the fish are doing ok in the holding pen (giant rubbermaid container with powerhead and airstone) but i don't know how much longer they'll be happy. does this ever settle down!?

when should i add a live sand activator kit? i'm hoping things will have settled by wednesday and i can add the critters back to the tank then. so far, the nitrates aren't too bad, and i'm hoping that using the original water will reduce any further cycling.
