How to take out DSB????
Hello everyone,
I have not posted in a looooonnnggg time, it was a very busy summer. Anway I have a quick question I am going to take out my 2.5 (5 inch deep) year old DSB. Should I take it out all at once, or should I siphon out like a half inch every time I do water change? All of my rock is supported by PVC pipe so if I take a the sand out over a long time it will not create instablity in my rock work. Thanks for the help....

I would take it out all at one time if you can. Taking it out a little at a time will just keep it disrupted and not functioning correctly. Plus any nutrients that are stored in the lower levels will be released if you just remove a little of the top at a time.

Take one side out all at once, and the other a little at a time, and let us know which side thrives the best...

Tom is looking for info on DSB's. yours sounds somewhat like the way Tom has his. if you do not mind could you please post here your observations. i am also contemplating removal of the DSB from my display. my main concern is how to keep the LR stable on a bare bottom tank? Spanky, how do you keep it from sliding on the starboard stuff?

I'm still thinking of taking out mine, and perhaps a cup a day would work well, since I (like Casey) am lazy! How much do you take out per water change Casey? And how often are your WCs?

Geoff,
I will make sure to post the results and the condition of my DSB when I yank it out. The base rock in my tank is currently supported by 6" diamater PVC pipe cut the same depth as my DSB. I have not run into algae bloom problems with my DSB. I guess I am trying to be pro-active and take it out before the problems start arising. Since this tank is only 58 gallons a lot of real estate is taken up by the sand bed itself.
I did have one more question, for all those that have taken there DSB out. Did you manage to salvage the worms and critters in your sand bed or did you just throw them out with the DSB? I would like to save as many worms as possible but I am not quite sure how to get them out of the DSB. I thought of pouring the sand through a sieve?
I am going to put a shallow sand bed, to replace the DSB so I would like to keep a lot of the worms & fauna to give it a kick start. Thanks for the help!
