Bioballs and canister filters like Fluvals seem to be out... Fluvals seem to be best if run empty and mainly for circulation....live sand and live rock stocked at proper quantities and bioload kept light seems to be the best system if i'm understanding everything right....
Powerheads for circulation are good....skimmers for excess nutrients...

Sump/fuge systems for added watervolume and extra biological filtration are often used, filter media (floss, carbon etc) are usually used for water polishing.......

Puffy it all depends on what you want to keep in the SW. do u want a reef, or a fish only tank or a fish only with Live rock.

live rock, live sand, a clean up crew, and a good skimmer is all the filtration you need.

as for hang on fuge.. outta my range there, still too new so i dont have an answer for that yet

(sorry, i can only pass on what i've already learned lol)

How big is the tank you plan to setup ?
It will also help you decide what to buy...

And this, you need no matter what size tank...

GOing with a skimmer is a good idea in my books. I am not sure of what kind of hang ons are good, hopefully someone else will pipe in. A refugium can also benefit your tank greatly. If kept preditor free and seeded, it can produce great ammounts of small life forms, (from worms, to pods, to larvae and so on down). These critters can both feed your tank and process detritus. Alot of folks also use the fuge to grow algaes to help remove nutrients and out compete unslightly algae grow in the main system. Although Algae is not really an effective way of removing nutrient and must be Physically removed in order actually export, it does do a decent job.

Hope it helps
