Once or twice a week, I take a powerhead and blow off all my live rock. This forces all the waste into the water column, where it either flows out my overflow and onto the filter pad in my sump, or the protein skimmer works on it.

In addition I have several brittle stars who help out.

Detritus is normally carried off by robust reef currents, so yes, in the relatively stagnant glass boxes we keep, some periodic blasting is more than acceptable.

Having variable currents in your tank also helps eliminate 'current shadows' --regions of prolonged, relative calm where mulm/detritus can settle quietly and accumulate.

Lots of devices allow a powerhead to sweep a concentrated jet back and forth, else turn on a collection of powerheads in predetermined combinations and intervals.
