Question

Bristleworms, Good or Bad for Reef

I think the jury may still be out on the question of Bristleworms being good or bad for a reef setup. However, my LFS has offered me all of his Bristleworms he finds off of his LR because he discards them. He said if I wanted them I could have them. What does anyone think, would you deliberatly add these critters to a newly setup 20 Gl High Reef tank?

Wink

Get the worms, just be careful, they aren't called "bristle" for nothing. Use tape to get them out of your fingertips.

I think they look pretty cool! The ultimate scavengers!! I have only seen small ones (<1") until feeding last night. I was sitting in front of the tank (I know, imagine that) and this big ol' 5 incher pops out of a rock!! Needless to say, didn't tell the wife about that one. She gets grossed out by them. I get enough detrius and crap laying around as it is. Couldn't imagine how much worse it would be without all those worms! HTH

Attack of the killer bristle worm! This is a pic of a bristle eating a copepod in my refugium! I think the copepod was dead and the bristle just taking advantage of this. When I saw this I ran and got my camera. My son thought I was crazy. “What’s wrong daddy???”

IMO bristles are an iatrical part of my little ecosystem.

I believe bristleworms are good, but do not accept to many of them from the LFS for a 20g tank. You do not want a population crash of any kind in a reef tank. I think you will be fine if you get the smaller ones, if they starve and die it would not be that big of a deal. I have seen larger ones eat smaller ones, so if you get some of the bigger ones they may actually take out some of your smaller worms. I think you can get to much of a good thing.

Bristleworms are great! And free is a very good price. Lots of people pay for 'em.

Thanks for all of your help. I will get some of these critters from my LFS. I just don't know how many would be a good number to get. Any more opinions ....Thanks again

you won't need more than a half dozen or so. They will reproduce in your tank and increase in numbers according to the available food.

Personally, I beleive that the worms only go after the sick and dying clams. Supposedly, the clams emit a sweetish odor when they are failing that attracts the worms.
