Adding more sand?

Hello all,
I was wondering if it is adviseable to add more live sand on top of what there already in my tank? Right know theres 30# in a 30 gal, not very much. I would like to order a detrivor kit, but I'm pretty sure 1.5" isn't not enought. What are your thoughts on this? By the way the tanks is 6 mo old w/ 60# LR, Various snails, hermits, crabs, 4 Pepermints, Brittle Star, 2 Cukes, 1 Sacro, 2 Sinularia, 1 Capnella, and a Caulastrea. No fish, yet. All water parameters are in an exceptable range. 192 watt PC, LifeReef sump and Skimmer.
Thanks for all of the help. - Scott

Hi Scott
when I increased the depth of my Dtank sand bed I added a couple of inches to it and left it for three week and added a the same amount again I continued in this maner until I achieved the depth i wanted.
Here is some good info and advice you should find some info in this advice about what you wish to do.

I have added nonlive aragonite to my existing sand bed about a 1/2" at a time and left some open areas. I havent noticed any harmful effects. I would give the infauna a week or two to migrate on its own and resist the temptation to stir the sand bed to speed things up. You might want to look at the wtitings of Shimek, Toonen and Bingham @ this site http://www.reefcentral.com/library/library.htm

I read somewhere that you can use a clean pipe (or tall glass cup) to pour the sand in... might help keep the tank from getting cloudy when you add the sand.
