Camera Help, Please
Hello TRT, Merry Christmas to all. There are some really good digital photography going on at this site. I thought maby someone could help me out. I have a Olympus D-370, not the best camera but it does take awsome pics of everything but the reef tank. Everything seems to come out pink. I've tried a bunch of different settings but I can't seem to nail the problem. Maby someone knows why this is happening. Heres an example. The xenia is nowhere near that color.

Hey nick, how are you? I have an olympus 700 UZ. I get the same problem sometimes. I have VHO's on my tank and I think that has something to do with it. Pics of tanks I have taken with MH I have not had the same problem. The color is more pure.
The best thing I have found to do is put the camera in Manual mode. Now I do not know what the real name for this setting is, but I can adjust the "brightness" it goes -2 -1 0 +1 +2.... This along with playing with the shutter speed has had the greatest effect on my pictures. All of mine at first were dark and purple. If you can make these adjustments try it out. I would take a picture, then adjust, take another pic, then adjust again. Do this taking a pic of the same object and then compare them on the computer and see which ones come out better. It would also help if you jotted down some notes about what you tried.
That is the best I can do for ya. I am not a great photography expert, but I have done pretty good just playing around with the settings.

Whats up AkaSlyGuy, how's your Dallas haul doing? I try to play with the brightness as well, never seems to help much with the color. I figure its the VHO's also, I'm not about to redo my lights so I can take better pics . I wish the atinics were on a different ballest so I could turn them off at picture time. Oh well, back to the drawing board. Have a great holiday, see ya around!

Hi,
I don't have an olympus... mine's a Sony; but I do have a filter that screws on to the front of my camera that takes the pink out for me when I shoot the tank. Filter is specifically for filtering UV discolorations.
I'm no expert, and I don't know if there are filters for your camera, but if they are available, they really can help!
This is a fairly accurate color of my Xenias:
The filter is similar to this one, just clear colored lens.

Hey guys--
I posted this on another tread too.. but I have an olympus C2100UZ and all VHOs .. the way I avoid this color problem is by setting the white-balance to "Cloudy" I'm pretty sure all Olympus cameras have these (I know the 700UZ does)
Experiment with the diferent white-balance settings until you get the best result. Also, try the "Instant Fix" in the Camedia software that you use to download your pictures.

Hey Nick,
My Olympus D340R doesn't have all the settings that yours does, but does use the same Camedia software for downloading. Check your settings under the "Image" drop down menu to see if color balance is out of whack and try "Image Fix" as JDVC suggested. I couldn't duplicate the "pinkness" in your pics by tinkering with the color balance but it did make a big difference.
HTH.

Hi Nick, I use an Olympus d450 and have not had that problem. I have PC lights on my tank. I think the VHO actinics are causing your color shift. Have you tried shooting with them off? You can also use your flash. Just make sure you are close to the glass and if possible, at an angle to it, not straight on. This will cut down on glare. If this washes out the pic too much I tape some photographic diffusion material over the flash (kleenex will work also). Good luck! Happy Holidays:santa:

Hi Nick! I used the macro mode that Drew suggests and have the flower Icon and zoom in and out til the flower turns yellow and that is the sweet spot and click!

Remember those close-ups I post a few weeks ago? I didn' t notice the flower, turned yellow, sweet spot. So yesterday, I experimented, and I saw it once! Just one fleeting moment. The the AF light started blinking, and I couldn't get it off that I read the instructions (again!!!) and tried a couple more times. I just couldn't get the hang of it.
Do you press the macro/infinity mode first, then the zoom, or the other way around?

Cath,
To get the yellow flower (I dont know why one would care, most of my pics arent at that focal lengh) put it in macro, zoom all the way in, then back out till the light comes on.
The flashing green light means you cant get a auto-focus lock. Try somming in or out just a bit, change the angle of the shot...point at something at the same distance as your subject, and push the shutter half way to get it to focus...then return to the subject. Or if it's dark, add more light.
