Back From Grand Cayman - Took Pictures
Hi - All. I'm back from my two week Scuba trip to Grand Cayman. You guys asked me to take some underwater pictures. I got a few (what I consider) really good ones. Here is one.
My reef tank survived quite well with the housesitter. I had premeasured the food for each day using hospital pill cups, so she would not overfeed. I put two pieces of masking tape on the sump and told her to make sure the water line stayed between the two, and left her 10 gallons of purified water.

I was not sure you wanted me to junk up the board with more than one picture, so I picked the best one.
But ... since you asked here are two more good ones.
This third one really did not come out well, the Nurse Shark was under a rock ledge so the light was bad and it was hard to focus, but I'm including it just because of all the headlines shark's have gotten lately.
Notice the Royal Gramma checking out the shark.

Great pics Gary! I spent a week in Cayman a couple of years back diving twice a day...to date its the best diving I've done, even beats the he!! out of the great barrier reef if you can believe that. Did you get a chance to dive off the norhtern wall? Spectacular place! Hey, how big was the nurse shark? It's kinda hard to judge from the picture but it looks fairly large.
I love the royal gramma hanging out with the shark. I haven't had a chance to do a lot of diving since I started keeping marine fish, but I can't wait to actually recognize the different species.
Anyhow, great pics...send us some more!

Superb Pics, Gary,
Glad you had a great trip!
It is amazing how different the underwater looks through a reefer's eye's. I got to a lot of diving and snorkeling in the Bahamas several years ago.....didn't have a clue what I was looking at, other than the common fish and, of course, the lobsters and conch that were scheduled for table fare!
Now, I look at everything differently, like you said, spending more time with the little stuff!

Great Pictures. What kind of camera did you use? I am taking my family to Aruba for a week of snorkeling in Dec. and want to get some underwaters shots.
Thanks,
Homer

The scuba diving was wonderful. We did a few dives on the North side, East side, and South side (we were staying on the east side).
The nurse shark was 4 1/2 to 5 feet. The next day we encountered a free swimming Caribean Reef Shark that was about 5 or 6 feet long, he passed with in 10 feet of us (going in the opposite direction) and did not even look at us. But ... I didn't have my camera that day.
Before having a reef tank I used to try to cover as much distance as possible on each dive to make sure I "saw everything!" during the 40 minute dive. Now I sit in front of my reef tank for 40 minutes looking at about 6 feet of reef and constantly see something new. So on this trip I took it a lot slower and really studied the rock. Taking a more "micro" view. I have been to Grand Cayman a few times, but thig time I saw a whole different world.
I also found myself picking up hunks of rock and looking at it thinking ..."this is a $30 rock"..."this ones a $50 rock" ... " Wow that piece of coral could be broken up into 10 $100 pieces" ... of course I did not take any.
It's also funny how the same fish have different names. For example - the Royal Gramma is a Fairy Basslett in the wild.

Homer ... The camera is actually a Sony PC-110. It's really a digital video camera, and that was the main reason I bought it (I also took a couple of hours of video on this trip). But it also has a Sony Memory Stick in it, so you can take digital stills. I put it in an underwater housing made by Light & Motion Industries. It has a monitor back so I can view the video and stills underwater. I can switch back and forth between video and stills underwater. And of course with the digital you don't waste film processing costs to get the rare good shot. It seems to take about 20 shots to get one keeper. Fish don't stand still and say "cheese". A few years ago with our old film cameras we one time spent about $200 on developing and printing and got nothing worth showing. Digital is great!

Brooke-
DEFINITELY get certified for SCUBA before the cruise. You could probably skip diving in Ocho Rios, but be sure that you dive in Grand Cayman and Cozumel...they are the two favorites of Gary and me...so far!
