Hi, my name is Glenn. I have keep a FW tank for about 6 years now, and was always interested in the SW setups but the time or place was never right. And, I wasn't willing to convert my FW with its 5yr-old goldfish Cleo to SW - I don't think Cleo would have liked the change! Earlier this year, my wife & I moved to San Diego from the San Francisco Bay area, and I took the opportunity to build two custom side-by-side 50 gal. tanks - one for Cleo, one for reefing. Boy, I had little idea what I was in for! Fascinating, frustrating, educational, and fun all at the same time.

I'm an avid DIYer and work in metal, wood, plastics - just about anything that can be cut, drilled, shaped, and formed. I find tinkering/building stuff for the tanks as much fun as the tanks themselves. (Built a battery backup system for emergency circulation and air pumps yesterday!)

I'm an EE by education and application for most of my career, and currently market semiconductors for fiber optics communications to keep the lights on.

I really appreciate the friendliness and help of this board - the collective knowledge here is unbelievable, and saved me greatly many times while beginning my reef tank!

Hi Doug. My name is Blake and I first got into this hobby when I moved to college and my good friend here was the manager at the LFS. Since I didn't like my roommate very much (in the dorms, no room to get away) I started spending my free time at the LFS visiting my friend. The first tank I ever had was a 1g saltwater fish bowl that housed a yellow stripe damsel and some (very small) pieces of LR. I set the bowl on my window sill (how else could you light a fish bowl) and it had an undergravel filter. When I moved out of the dorms and into the apartment I set up a 29g tank and a 10g FO for my girlfriend. I have had the 29g set up for about 4-5 months now. needless to say i am very new to this hobby and look forward to all of the great info that ya'll can share with me. BTW my name might be a little missleading. I'm not actually a kid ("The Get Up Kids" is one of my favorite bands). Im a 20 year-old college student. I enjoy surfing, diving, fishing, music. I also just joined an established punk rock band and will be playing guitar for them. I decided to join this site because every one here seemed so friendly. thank you all.

Hello, I am another 20 year old college student. I am studying Biology. I have a 29 gallon reef stocked primarily with soft corals, corallimorphs and a few fish. It has been set up for about a year. Before that I had a fish-only saltwater tank. All through my childhood since I can remember I always had some freshwater fish. Fishkeeping is just in my blood

That was a very good read!

Hey all I'm Scott (20) My girlfriend and I would spend some of our afternoons at our LFS just staring at the SW fish forever... We knew that we would start saving up and get a tank. It started out by a 55 used (scratched to the woohaw, the lady used it for breeding) so we would use it to start out, made mistakes, (no deaths) but then boxing day came around and we got our 65 gal. tall tank and a nice cabinet stand. We've had saltwater for about 3 months... But we spend hours reading boards and reading books. I think that because of this we have some nice stuff going on, I love this hobby and glad to meet people that are in the same "boat" as me

Hi Folks-

It's me Brooke. The long lost original founder of The Reef Tank. I want to thank Steven, Doug, Dick, Alice, Bill, Horge, and everyone else for keeping this little board going. I started my little beginner's board in jan of 98, I believe, after getting fed up with the flame wars of old. It grew and evolved into The Reef Tank about a year later. In a way I'm glad this board has stayed smaller than the others. My reefkeeping experience has been typical. We started out with a little 20g that was doing very good. We then moved to a bigger tank, and another big tank and had a 90g FO and a 100g reef going until everything crashed in June of 00. A little neglect, a source water problem, a sick fish, and a killer crab led to the disaster. Everything was dying just as Jon and I were getting married. We now have nothing but empty tanks. We are going to sell the 90g and will be starting the 100g very soon. I am also going to set up a 38 gallon seahorse tank. Don't worry..using captive bred seahorses from Ocean Rider. We are looking forward to getting our tanks going again and have missed them and all of you very much. Hopefully, in the time that we have been "off" from reefing we have learned from our mistakes and solved some of our source water and maintenance problems. I promise you will be seeing more of me and Jon here on TRT.

Take care-
Brooke Hanna (formerly Earthman)

Brooke so good to see you back, we have all missed you. Sorry to hear about the tank catastrophes Hopefully the new setups will work out much better. Will you redo the webpage and show the development of the seahorse system

Welcome back, Honeymooners!!!

Brooke and Jon, it's so good to see you both!
Really sorry about your tanks but glad to see that you are going to start the 100 back up.
We have a great group of members here and new ones stopping in all the time. It's great to have your experience and expertise back on the board.

How is TN doing, I know that I really miss it down there sometimes. I don't miss the heat, well maybe when it is -20 plus windchill here.
Take care
Jonathan

I'm new here, in fact this is my first post. It's nice to get to know you all this way!

I have had FW tanks for over 30 years but only recently got into a FOWLR tank. My first attempt a couple of years ago was cut short by my lovely husband surprising me with a new fish...a very aggresive Trigger he put directly into the tank! After the murder was over and all bodies buried, the tank has been sitting empty since then. I'm now in the process of starting it back up again and hope I can ask you more experienced folks for some help. The more I learn through reading this BB, the more I realize I don't know! I didn't know much about the internet back then so what I thought I knew came mostly from my LFS.

I'll be starting with a 120gal, magnum 350 canister and fluidized sand filters, protein skimmer. 2 double daylight fixtures, 1 actinic. Combo of CC and sand.

Hope I don't make too much of a pest of myself!

Hello my name is Russell and first let me dispell the stereotype that I am not a cowboy. I hate country music in fact. I am a youngin probably on this board. My only fish experience is a 3 gallon fish tank got at a garage sale in college which all the fish died in 3 months. And I have a 30gallon
fresh water tank that I started 6 months ago which is going very well. Though it is pretty much a no brainer to run them. Two weekends ago I was at a friends house for dinner and I saw his 70 gallon FO tank. I kind of looked at it and said cool then drank more beer. Last weekend I passed by a fish store that I heard was good and stopped by to buy two fish because my local fish store is tiny. They had a huge salt water area and I was now drooling. When I get an idea into my head there is no stopping me. So now here I am buying that 70 gallon FO tank probably next week. And I am going to start building all the necessary equipment to support a reef. I am a DIY guy... I never get to use my engineering degree in my line of work. So maybe I can buy my expensive education to work. Actually probably none of it will apply. I don't think Fluids or Heat Transfer will really be needed in this. So this will be my second hobby. I look forward to meeting some other people here. Helping out with my limited knowledge. And of course asking tons of questions.

Hello - I would like to introduce myself. My name is Jody and in the past (1970's - 80's)maintained a marine aqu. On learning about the recent developments in marine systems I started a mini-reef tank (75 gal.), 1 year ago. I am having a blast! Most of my soft coral are reproducing and I have a cleaner shrimp carrying eggs right now! I am very interested in this BB and from time to time will join in on the topics of discussion. Thanks for the opportunity!

Hello everyone,
I just registered today. This is the friendliest board that I have seen.
My tank is 3 or 4 yrs old, started as FO, then slowly evolved into a reef tank. It wasn't until I started reading the boards and researching the net that I finally found some real knowledge and info on this subject. Unfortunately, I have made more mistakes than I care to own up to(But the livestock have survived!)and am still trying to undo some of my bloopers.
I also have a 40gal high FW tank, and another 30 gal long salt water tank that I put my "extra" live rock in, will be messing with that one at a later date. All this fish stuff started 15 yrs ago when I set up a tank of guppies for my kids!
Glad that I found this board, wish I had sooner!
