Yellow head Jawfish

I was at the LFS today and saw they have a couple of Yellow head Jawfish sucking up sand and spliting it out. Anyone has experiance with these fish? That will turn the sand over a lot faster than any Hermit crab for sure. My main concern is will they pick on the Zos or any polyps.

Make sure your rockwork is very stable and has supports under it other than the SB. They are notorious for causing the LR to topple by uncermining it. They also like to jump, seems to be a problem with most jawfish.

Jawfish don't actually sift sand looking for food; they're digging their burrows so the only sand they'll work on is where they want to make a home. So if you're looking for something to clean the top surfaces of your sand throughout your tank, a jawfish probably isn't what you want.

They are, however, very fun to watch and can complete small engineering miracles with little shells and pebbles

They aren't extensive tunnelers like pistol shrimp, but if they decide to build a burrow under a corner of your rockwork, you may find it undermines it, sometimes at the expense of the jawfish. I lost one to a cave in Generally speaking, they'll live in one primary burrow and have a secondary one that may be not much more than a bolt hole. Sometimes though, they'll dig several burrows before settling on one or two locations they favor. They do tend to dump sand too, where you might not want them to but not nearly so bad as the sand sifting gobies; those things drive me nuts!

Jawfish can be pretty disruptive to your sandbed, depending on the lay out of your tank, but that can be mitigated somewhat by providing them with shells and pebbles for building in one location. In my nano I had one burrow that was a piece of live rock with a hole in it that I sunk down into the sand and then left plenty of building materials near the entrance. The jawfish took right to it and never caused any more problems with digging. I lost that jawfish to some type of infection but I'd definitely like to have another one someday.

HTH,

Alice

thanks for the great input. Looks like I will pass on the jaw fish. Don't need an earthquake inside the tank as we have plenty outside the tank... living in earthquake country of California.

Another reason to support your LR on 4" PVC pilings. Placing some crushed coral and shell in a protected location (front corner of the tank with some small rocks) will make a predictable burrow for your jawfishes. As Alice posted, they do not sift the sandbed for food, but use their mouths as shovels to excavate the burrow and steal from other jawfish burrows. If your system is at least 6 feet long, you can have a burrow at each end of the tank. Very entertaining to watch them steal choice bits of construction materials from each other.

I have a Yellow headed Jawfish that is a little stinker. He is very entertaining to watch but I learned my lesson when I first got him. He dug a hole in the back of my tank and ended up UNDER the under gravel filter. Took 2 hrs luring him out with Brine and disrupted the UGF plate (got some crushed coral stuck under the edge when I tried getting him out).

Ummm I don't think your jawfish quite expected to find an under gravel filter in your tank Buehlz.

I love my jawfish! He and the flame hawk are the most entertaining fish I have ever kept. Make sure you have a sandbed and lots of shells and shell pieces in your tank. Mine used the shells to sure up his little tunnel entrance, and close the front door to it at night
