spots on clownfish
Hopefully someone can help me identify these spots on our clown...
they appear to more internal than external...the first two clownfish we had had them also...the other fish (two damsels) do not have them...
the fish appears healthy, no labored breathing, no wierd motions, eats like a pig, etc...
thanx for the help...

i've read a few threads like this. and the conmclusion was that is normal color changing as clowns mature.. not sure if it's correct though.

When we had some clowns come in the store with those spots, we quaranteed them all. We put cleaner wrasses and cleaner shrimp in the tanks with them. We did not use chemicals in our system tanks, so this was the best way (in our opinion) to take care of most problems.
Are they wild caught or tank raised?

tank raised purchased from Premium Aquatics...I picked them up, they were not shipped...I didn't notice the spots when I brought them home...I'll keep my fingers crossed that it is "aging spots" (to have those at such a young age )

I'll bet you have zooanthids in your tank? Clowns will get the black spots from touching zooanthids. IMO seems to have no ill effects on the clowns. My clowns I have had for 6 years have always had the spots because they live in a sarcopyton that has zooanthids all around the base. There was recently a discussion on this at reefs.org http://reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=34918
I wouldn't worry about it.

Sally,
verrry interesting....yes I have bunches of Zoos...the pics on the link wouldn't come up but it seems that right or wrong, it is not an uncommon occurrence...
boy, "learning something new everyday" is a mojor understatement in this hobby....
thanx for your input...

We also have tons of zoos...all sorts, but our 4-yr-old TR percs have never had dark spots, or spots of any kind. They live in the yellow polyps.

At the store, it would be impossible to keep the fish that were for sale in a "reef" tank. So, the spots in our experience had nothing to do with zoo's or other corals.
Good article. Thanks for sharing
