Seahorse tank lighting
Ok I've been talking about it for a long time. I have had a 35g hex since last christmas. I'm finaly going to get started on geting the equipment for it. I am mainly going to keep seahorses in it, and need to know how much light I should put on it.
I was thinking about 2 24in VHO making it 150watts total, I would probably do 1super atinic and one 10k.
I'm just afraid of that being to much light.
Mabie I should do one VHO 10k and 1 NO superactinic giving me a total of 95watts.

Randy, for see horses I believe VHO is way overkill, you can get by on much less light. Besides which VHO is more cost effective on 4' and longer tanks. I think a dual tube NO setup with blue and white would be good or maybe some of the smaller (20somethin watt) blue and whites from ahsupply or hellolights.com
Are you doing a trick hex canopy or just going with a pendant?

I concur with Doug. Unless you are keeping corals in there (I'll elaborate on that below), seahorses do not need, nor do they like, intense lighting.
On my 37 RR Oceanic at home I have 1 x 55 w pc so I can keep a few shrooms and a leather or two. These are safe with horses, but most LPS corals would be too much of a sting risk since the horses will hitch on anything and everything.
In my horse tank at the shop, it's a 20 X-high (footprint of a 10g, but twice the height) with an Eclipse 1 hood with a single NO tube - and they seem to like that just fine. No corals in there, just a sponge and Obi-won the Goby
What species of horse do you plan to keep? Captive raised or wild caught?

Jennm~ most likely a captive breed mustang, and I probably will have a few shrooms in there along with a scooter blenny. so you think just two NO?
Doug~ I will be making a trick hex a friend of mine is going to help me out.

so if I put a 55w 10k PC could I put a 30w NO actinic in there too? I realy like being able to simulate some sort of a moonlight. And I just like the actinic look!

Hmmmmm.... My wife wanted a seahorse tank a while back when I was only keeping FW tanks... Now she has two African Clawed frogs... :-/
How can I get her to give up the frogs in trade for a Seahorse tank??? **Evil Grin**
She's not one for researching out how to keep fish and I'd love to teach her the responsibility of it... When she got the ACF's I told her she was totally responsible for their upkeep hoping she'd do some research and such.... All she came back with was, "Someone said they keep these frogs and they get big and can jump out of the tank".... So now I have a 10 gallon in the bedroom that is 3/4 full and have to listen to someone peeing in the toilet all night long.... ARGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
Help me out with this agony here... I already told her she can have the 20 gallon and I would reclaim the 10 gallon for a nano-reef... (and to get rid of the infinately peeing person in my dreams)......
Now, after this crazy rant, Would a 20 gallon be ok for seahorses?
And how do I get her to convert???
